ASIMOV, ISAAC
The Collapsing Universe - the Story of Black Holes
London, Hutchinson. 1977, First Edition. (ISBN: 0091317703). Hard Cover, 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. A Very Good+ clean and tight copy which has a name to front endpaper and an ink correction to a formula on one page. Dustjacket is also VG+ and is not price clipped. First UK edition. Asimov explores the implications of black holes, with lucid excursions into related questions. Was the mysterious 30-megaton blast that flattened a Siberian forest in 1908 actually a small black hole? Does matter drawn into a black hole reappear out the 'other side' as anti-matter, a sort of mirror image of the universe as we know it? Does their existence raise the possibility that matter can move faster than the speed of light? As he probes these and other questions, he takes us on a tour from the atom's innermost core to the outer reaches of the universe. 20. Very Good/Very Good.

BURLING, ROBBINS
The Talking Ape - How Language Evolved
New York, Oxford University Press. 2005, First Edition. (ISBN: 0199279403). Hard Cover, 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. A Fine unmarked copy with Fine dustjacket. ix + 286 pages. In this fascinating, mind-opening book, Professor Burling not only presents the most convincing account of the origins of language yet published: he sheds new light on how language affects the way we think, behave, and relate to each other. He gives us a deeper understanding of the nature of language itself. Tracing language back to its earliest origins among our distant ape-like forbears several million years ago, he charts its growth to the time of our recent human ancestors. He offers a new account of the route by which we acquired our defining characteristic and explores the nature of language as it developed throughout the course of our evolution. NOT EX LIB L. CHARDIN, PIERRE TEILHARD DE
The Appearance of Man
London, Collins. 1965, First Edition. Hard Cover, 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. A Fine unmarked copy in green cloth boards with dustjacket which has some creasing to top and is complete. Translated from the French by J.M. Cohen. The book contains a series of essays in which the author builds up his theory of the origins of man and his relationship with the great families of Hominids, among which man arose, but which do not belong in his line of ancestry. Teilhard himself took part in the discovery of Pekin Man (Sinanthropus) and twice visited the sites in South Africa from which the other main branch of Hominids, Australopithecus, was being evacuated. As the book proceeds from the earlier essays to the late, one sees a remarkable confirmation of Teilhard's theories, in the form of later discoveries which fitted into his scheme. Being first and foremost a palaeontologist, he writes most excitingly and graphically, and here the philosopher is at the same time an excavator and eye-witness. NOT EX LIB A1B. Fine/Very Good.

FULLER, STEVE
Science
Buckingham, Open University Press. 1997, First Edition. (ISBN: 0335198481). Hard Cover, 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. A near Fine unmarked copy in laminated boards (Fine apart from a mark left from removal of a label to lower spine and very small indentation to front side. viii + 159 pages. What qualifies such seemingly disparate disciplines as paleontology, high energy physics, industrial chemistry and genetic engineering as 'sciences', and hence worthy of sustained public interest and support? In this innovative and controversial introduction to the social character of scientific knowledge, Professor Steve Fuller argues that if these disciplines share anything at all, it is more likely to be the way they strategically misinterpret their own history than any privileged access to the nature of reality. The book features a report written in the persona of a Martian anthropologist who systematically compares religious and scientific institutions on earth, only to find that science does not necessarily live up to its own ideals of rationality. Fuller highlights science's multicultural nature through a discussion of episodes in which the West's own understanding of science has been decisively affected by its encounters with Islam and Japan. C3C. Near Fine/No Jacket.
