Shipwreck on Stormy Sea
A ship was flung unto the rocks near the coast. Survivors are rowing away in a dinghy, while a second ship (a steam paddle ship) goes by in the distance. According to the caption, this painting hung at the World Fair in Paris in 1855. Tinted lithograph on wove paper, sheet size 279 x 366 mm., image size 173 x 240 mm. Lithograph by M.F.H. de Haas after the painting by Louis Meijer. Printed by P. Blommers, The Hague, around 1855. Maurits Frederik Hendrik de Haas (Rotterdam 1832 - 1895 New York City) was a Dutch draughtsperson, watercolorist, lithographer, painter and etcher. He was named painter to the Dutch navy in 1857. In 1859 he emigrated to New York. Louis Meijer (Amsterdam 1809 - 1866 Utrecht) was a Dutch painter, printmaker and draughtsperson, who specialised in naval scenes. He was taught in the Dutch Romantic style of painting by George Pieter Westenberg and Jan Willem Pieneman. Matthijs Maris was one of his students. In good condition. Some scattered light foxing in the margins. A small dampstain in the lower left margin corner.

Groups of people near the coast during a storm. In the foreground a group of women is consoled for the (possible) loss of their hustbands. In the background the storm rages and people are rowing out to sea to rescue survivors. Below the image an eight-line poem in Dutch by Dr. E. Laurillard. Tinted lithograph with accent hand colouring on wove paper, sheet size 375 x 522 mm., image size 235 x 360 mm. Made by Willem Hendrik Last after his own design. Printed by Wed. E. Spanier & Zn. (The Hague) and published in 1868 by D.J. Couvée. The revenue of this print would be used to support the 'Vereeniging tot ondersteuning van Weduwen en Wezen van verongelukte Visschers te Katwijk en Noordwijk aan Zee' (Society for support of Widows and Orphans of shipwrecked Fishermen of Katwijk and Noordwijk aan Zee). Hendrik Willem Last (1817-1873) was a lithographer, draughtsperson and watercolourist. He was the brother of C.C.A. Last. In fair condition. The image and text below quite clean and nicely crisp. However, dampstains in the top and bottom right corners, a crease in the lower right, and a tear from the left margin into the sheet. Surface damage in the top margin. None of these defects affect the image. Some general soiling and scattered foxing.
