¶ Antonio Agustín y Albanell (1516-1586), also referred to as Augustinus, was a Spanish Humanist historian, jurist and Roman Catholic archbishop of Tarragona. now principally remembered as the first canon law historian. His first main work, Emendationum et opinionum libri IV, proposed the now widely accepted thesis that the Littera Florentina manuscript was the source for all other copies of the Pandects. This undermined the authority, fundamental to medieval Roman law, of the Latin Vulgate text of the Pandects. (Wikipedia).

De Rochefort draagt het werk op aan de schepenen van Rotterdam, bij wie het recht in goede handen is: "De oeffening van welke deugt (Justitite), Uwe Ed.Groot Achtbaerheden binnen deze Stadt met een ongemeene luyster doen bloeyen, en alzoo door een ongekreukte handhaving van het Regt, het gemeene welvaeren op het krachtigste bevestigen, en voortzetten: Waer door ook een volkome rust, onderling verrtrouwen, en eenigheit tusschen de Ingezetenen word onderhouden."
¶ Een vertaling en bewerking van 'Les loix civiles dans leur ordre naturel' door de Fransman Jean Domat.
