A popular print with eight different professions: a stonecutter (steenzager), a stonemason (steenhouwer), a basket maker (mandenmaker), a tinsmith (loodgieter), a dredger (baggeraar), a carpenter (timmerman), a planter, and a wheelwright (wagenmaker). Each image is accompanied by a description of the work and an explanation of its use. The woodcuts are copies after engravings from Spiegel van het Menselyk Bedryf (1694) an emblem book with 100 trades, by Jan and Caspar Luyken, following the moralist style of Jacob Cats. Deventer, J. de Lange (1818 - 1845); via Mindermann & Co., Amsterdam, whose address is mentioned on the print: ‘Te Amterdam, bij Mindermann en Comp., in de Bergstraat’; numbered ‘No. 45.’ in the upper right corner. l 8 woodcut illustrations (each ca. 90 x 80 mm) on paper, hand coloured with orange and brown; 4-line verses under each image; total: 335 x 415 mm; Pro Patria Watermark; folded twice, paper in good condition, except small tear in left margin and small hole in centre.Meyer p. 206, Boerma p. 778 (Lange 45).

The Antiquary [Death's Doings (publication title), 1828]
Plate from Richard Dagley's book: 'Death's Doings; Consisting of Numerous Original Compositions, in Verse and Prose, the Friendly Contributions of Various Writers: Principally Intended as Illustrations of Thirty Copper-plates Designed and Etched by R. Dagley.' The poem dedicated to the Antiquarian is composed by Cheviot Tichburn and it extends from page 199 to 201, introduced by this etching. The expresses a sort of criticism towards this profession that rather than looking at the present and take action is totally devoted to the past. Yet when death shows up in his shop, holding a shield bearing the antiquarian's name he cannot do anything but leave is life along with all the treasures he collected and was about to sell. A salesman of rat poinson with his dog and apprentice. The boy holds a staff with a small cage with dead rats. The man carries a bag and tools, and a rat crawls on his cape. Etching and engraving on laid paper, by Cornelis Visscher (II) after his own design, sheet size: 384 x 326 mm., cropped to or within platemark, two small tears in the right margin, otherwise excellent.
