Catchpenny print. Popular print showing the four classes: a beggar, soldier, farmer and nobleman. In each image an inscription: ‘Aes en Aes en heeft niet’; ‘Deux Aes en geeft niet’; ‘Quater trois moet geeven’; ‘Daer Sinque Six van moet leven’,This appears to be a reference to the ‘Deux-Aesbijbel’, named after a note with Nehemia 3:5, describing how the rich refused to contribute to the rebuilding of Jerusalem. The note reads: ‘Deux aes en heeft niet, six cinque en gheeft niet, quater dry die helpen vrij’. This refers to a dice game, meaning that the poor (deux aes) do not own anything, the rich (six and five) do not give anything, but the middle class (three and four) are the ones willing to help.Amsterdam, J. Wendel en Zoon (1819 - 1842); address mentioned on print: ‘Te Amsterdam, by, J. Wendel, Boekdrukker, op de Angeliesgragt, by de tweede Dwarsstraat’; numbered ‘no. 2.’ in the upper right corner. l Four woodcut illustrations (each ca 145 x 110 mm) on hand-made paper; above each image a caption identifying the figure, and under each a 4-line verse; total: 395 x 320 mm; Pro Patria watermark; slightly frayed edges; small restorations on verso.Meyer p. 337, Boerma, p. 837 (Wendel 2).

Centsprent: Les 3 chemins de l’Eternité.
Catchpenny print. Popular print showing an allegorical map based on Matthew 7:13-14: ‘Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it’ (NIV).In this print’s version, there are not two, but three gates. The narrow gate and thorny path to the holy trinity in the heavenly Jerusalem is walked by pilgrims carrying the cross of Christ and the torch of faith. Through the wide gate go the unbelievers playing music and dancing, but they are led to the burning fire of hell. The third road is parallel to that of the true believers, but they failed on the way and are in the end still led to hell, because ‘death is unforgiving’. This is further explained in the inscription at the bottom: ‘Voyez, voici la Porte large, sans cesse ouverte à tout venant; chacun y entre sans obstacle. G.’ (Francois Georgin) at the bottom right.Epinal, Jean-Charles Pellerin (1825). l Woodcut illustration (370 x 580 mm) on paper; stencil coloured in blue, green, red, brown and yellow; 16 captions clarifying elements in the illustrations; total: 425 x 645 mm; folded three times, some small tears along the folds; traces of previous mounting on verso.Gernier-Pelle p. 564, Dumont 1965 p. 37, Aynoud 1957 p. 358.

BACHIENE, W.A., SCHEITS, MATTHIAS (CA. 1640-1700),
CONVOLUTE Prentbijbel, Print bible. 1. Nodig Berigt tot Verklaring der Eerste Landkaarte (A biblical atlas containing 12 maps/plans mostly of the Holy Land, Bachiene 1748-50) 2. Tafereelen des Ouden en Nieuwen Testaments, vertoonende de meeste en merkwaardigste geschiedenissen, in 150 prentverbeeldingen (...) (Scheits, 17xx).
1. Without titlepage, [Gorinchem, Nicolaas Goetzee, 1748-1750. Twelve attractive fold out maps depicting the world from a biblical point of view (J. van Hagen sculp.). Each map is accompanied by a few explanatory textpages [41 pp.]. Some maps are loose. Lit: Reinder Storm 2017 (https://geografie.nl/artikel/de-wereld-van-noachs-nakomelingen) 2. Without titlepage, [Amsterdam (Amsteldam), Reinier en Josua Ottens, 17xx]. There are 171 engravings in total. There are two numbered sets: VT 1-82 (depicting the Old Testament) and NT 1-68 (depicting the New Testament). The other 21 engravings are a frontispiece or semi titlepage mentioning: "te Amterdam, by Reinier en Josua Ottens", a depiction of heaven and earth, 6 fold out maps and some more fold out engravings. Later half linen binding with decorative paper. The hinge of the binding is worn and broken in some places. The construction of the book is still solid and the prints are in good condition with little stains or damages. In the front a loose engraving (undated) is inserted, worn along the edges and the foldlines. It is entitled: "Afbeelding van Hertoge Philips van Bourgondie, zyne Gemalinnen den Graave van Charolois, enz." "Naar 't origineel op de Leenkamer van Holland, J. Kobell sculps." The maps from part 1 of this convolute were never published as a book with the accompanying notes. They have been bound by the owner of this book for the occassion. That explains the absence of a titlepage. The engravings from part 2 (at least the two numbered sets) were first published in 1672 in a Lutherian Bible entitled "Biblia, dat is: die gantze H. Schrifft alten und newen Testaments (...)" known as "Scheitsbibel". The engravings were drawn by Matthias Scheits (1630-1700) and engraved by various famous German and Dutch engravers, for instance Abraham Bloteling (1640-1690) and Jan de Visscher (1633-1693). In later Dutch translations of this Scheitsbible the original engravings were copied by lesser known artists, mostly students of Romeyn de Hooghe. They have an English header, and a French and Dutch translation underneath the engraving. These engravings are known as "Scheitsprenten". To these later translations 12 extra engravings were added, with just a French subtitle. According to the frontispiece of our edition, it concerns an edition by Reinier and Josua Ottens. Usually this edition (as well as a dated editions by Ottens from 1760) comes without the extra engravings, so would just contain the Scheitsprenten. This convolute however, contains the mentioned Scheitsprenten as well as the 12 extra engravings and some more engravings that originally were published in F. Halma, Kanaän, Leeuwarden (1717). It seems to have been bound for the occasion, just like the first part of this convolute. NB: the set of the New Testament engravings in this convolute do not depict God where the same engravings in the Halma edition do depict God (cf. NT 51, NT 62, NT 63 and NT 65). The most obvious example is NT 62 where we see an empty throne. In conclusion: it concerns a unique collection of biblical engravings with a strong connection to the Bachiene and Scheits Bible.
