Two printmaker's benches in the foreground, and a printing press in the background. Wtih three figures working. This print was published to commemorate the opening of the printing press at the Rijksacademie voor Beeldende Kunsten (where the artist of this print had his training). Etching on laid paper, sheet size 215 x 184 mm., platemark 140 x 201 mm. Made by Dirk Harting, under supervision of Pieter Dupont, freely after Abraham Bosse. Dirk Harting (Salatiga 1884-1970 Haarlem) was a Dutch graphic artist, painter, draughtsperson, and print collector, born in Indonesia. His training was at the Rijksacademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam, where he was a student of Pieter Dupont and Willem Witsen, both accomplished artists and etchers. Pieter Dupont (Amsterdam 1870-1911 Hilversum) was an important Dutch graphic artist, best known for his depictions of work horses. He was a teacher at the Drawing School for Craftmanship (1891-1896) and in 1902 became professor of graphic art at the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam. Abraham Bosse (Tours c. 1604-1676 Paris) was a French designer, etcher, draughtsperson, painter, and art theorist. He wrote several tracts on printmaking and perspective. In good condition. Image area a little discoloured, verso overall browned (both from previous acidic matting). Two small stains in the top left margin corner.

Good condition, complete. Full leather, 17th century, with decorated spine, with title and 6 ribs. Red spotted decoration on the cuts. One joint is partly cracked. (20)+670 p., illustrated with several woodcuts. A richly illustrated Italian incunable, written by the Augustinian hermit Jacobus Philippus, with many city illustrations. The work begins with the creation of the world and summarizes the most important historical facts until the 15th century. Copy from the famous library of Antwerp cartographer Abraham Ortelius (1527-1598) with his name in handwriting at the bottom of the title page. Some 16th century annotations in the margins, in the same ink colour and handwriting as the owner's mark of Ortelius on the title page. Some of these annotations are partly cut off, so we can determine that the book was rebound and cut after the annotations. It is cut off quite short.
