Octavo; pp; 46, (ii), ads; illustrated with thirty five black and white wood engravings after the etchings of Creswick, Webster, Redgrave, Stonhouse, Cope and others; terra-cotta beveled cloth covered boards decorated and lettered in gilt, all edges gilt. A very nicely illustrated printing of Goldsmith's lament on social change and the destruction of the rural countryside. This copy has a gift inscription "given to Dear Mother", dated 1875 and another bit of holographic adornment, notably an earlier Christmas 1857 gift with "Cousin Eliza" executed in a highly decorative calligraphic style on a preliminary leaf. Moderate wear to the extremities of this very solid binding, light toning to some of the pages, yet a lovely very good copy.

Hagedorn is most remembered as a friend and confidant of Theodore Roosevelt. He served with the Roosevelt Memorial Association after TR's death and wrote Roosevelt in the Bad Lands, the first publication of the Roosevelt Memorial Association. He wrote several books of history as well. This volume contains "The Cobbler of Glenmorgan" a haunting verse tale of a deal with death. minor edge wear; very good .

Forty stunning illustrations by Warwick Gobel tipped onto heavy brown stock illustrate the 38 tales. The plates are unpaginated. Slight wear at the extremities. Small dampstain on the back cover, lower left which can be seen as faint in the pictures. Endpapers toned. "These tales and legends have been collected from many sources. Some of them have been selected from the Ko-ji-ki, or Record of Ancient Matters, which contains the mythology of Japan. Many are told from memory, being relics of childish days, originally heard from the lips of a school fellow or a nurse. Certain of them, again, form favorite subjects for representation upon the Japanese stage." A lovely copy of this beautiful book. Ill.: Warwick Gobel. Very good .
