MOORE, CHARLES AND DURHAM, MICHAEL
Powerful Days - the CIVIL Rights Photography of Charles Moore
New York, Stewart, Tabori and Chang. 1991. (ISBN: 1556702027). Soft Cover, 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. A near Fine unmarked copy.A large format volume of 208 pages. There are few Americans who would not recognize Charles Morre's most famous photographs. His images of police dogs and fire hoses being turned on demonstrators in Birmingham, Alabama in 1963 became instant symbols, in America and abroad, of the black struggle for equality. This book brings together the most significant pictures of the Civil Rights Movement in the South from 1958 to 1965. Charles Moore, an Alabama native who understood people on both sides of the struggle, came away from events with the pictures best able to tell the story. His heralded action photographs from the University of Mississippi, Birmingham, Selma, and rural Mississippi are at the heart of the book, but there is much more. He also photographed civil rights workers in storefronts and church basements. He covered Martin Luther King, Jr. in Montgomery long before he was known nationally, and he photographed the white opposition, including George Wallace and the Ku Klux Klan. The accompanying text is written by journalist Michael Durham, who worked with Moore on some of his most important stories. KEE, ROBERT
The Picture Post Album - a 50th Anniversary Collection
London, Barrie and Jenkins. 1989, First. (ISBN: 0712620583). Hard Cover, Folio - over 12" - 15" tall. A Fine unmarked copy with dustjacket which has a small closed tear. 176 pages (though they are not paginated).Picture Post represented a new kind of British journalism when it was launched by its founder, Edward Hulton, under the editorship of Stefan Lorant and Tom Hopkinson in October 1938. Subtitled Hulton's National Weekly, it quickly became a national institution. Authoritative, international in perspective, objective, idealistic, witty but not trivial, it achieved the status of a unique chronicle of its time. Established authors of the calibre of Rebecca West, Cyril Connolly and Somerset Maugham contributed; but what gave Picture Post its special journalistic character was the way in which the photographs, with their distinctive captions, dominated the reporting. On its demise in June 1957, there was nothing in journalism to take its place. PLEASE NOTE: A LARGE HEAVY BOOK OF 1.2 KILO UNPACKED WEIGHT WHICH MAY REQUIRE EXTRA SHIPPING COST 11. Fine/Very Good.
