Abercrombie (1909 – 1992) established the Department of Phonetics at the University of Edinburgh. He was a student of J. R. Firth and Daniel Jones. Hardcover.

London, J. M. Dent, 1925. Original blue cloth printed in black, vii+184pp. A very nice bright copy. Clean and tight. Foyles label inside cover. Book slightly cocked (with lean). Not dated, possibly about 1920-25 (c.f. preface and spelling of 'Ripman'), printed by Temple Press Letchworth (flower drawing). 3 colour lithos. very attractive. Language series lists to endpapers. Used; Very Good First published in English in 1898. By the editor of Dent's Modern Language Series Walter Ripman (Rippmann) and M. Alage, a teacher from Switzerland. Ripman, a dynamic and energetic figure who wrote and edited much on language teaching, speech and spelling later published a similar book called "First Steps in French" according to his 'reform method'. He was a major proponent of the use of phonetics in schools; a 'phonetic' edition of this book was also issued. Phonetics are present here in the vocabulary and in some poetry at the back. Lilias E Armstrong was an English phonetician who worked at University College London with the celebrated linguist Daniel Jones. She married the great Russian linguist S K Boyanus. Used; Very Good Howard Swan and Victor Betis translated François Gouin's definitve work "L'art d'enseigner et d'étudier les langues" or The Art of Teaching and Studying Languages which was published in London in 1892. New approaches to language teaching, such as Gouin's, in the late nineteenth century became part of what was known as 'The Reform Movement'. The authors use their own approach in this work basing it on Gouin's principles. Hardback.

The series provided useful publicity for the descriptive phonetic research at the department. Both common and less well-charted languages were chosen for a balanced list. (See Collins & Mees 'The Real Inspector Higgins: The Life and Career of Daniel Jones', 1999). Jones' work with Camilli and others provided the model for the updated IPA Principles published in 1949. I.) distinguished both in landscape painting and in book and advertising illustration. A proponent of phonetics, Marc Ceppi wrote a number of language books for children using this system. c.f. Author's stamp to title page, author's own correction in ink to last page (seems to have done this to all copies). Dust-wrapper age-worn at edges and a little discoloured else very good. Used; Very Good The linguist Colin Stork's label tipped-in lightly to end-paper. The challenging and eccentric mathematician Albert Eagle dismissed quantum mechanics and the theory of relativity, used his own mathematical notation and scorned English spelling. Most of his works were self-published and of a forceful nature. He did have some respect for children, though - see dedication! . Paperback.

The phonetic transcription edition 'Première partie' was published some 20 years after this 'Deuxième partie'. The celebrated headmaster, Dr W.H.D. Rouse was a proponent of the Direct Method and the use of phonetics in the teaching of foreign languages. Hardback.
