DUYVIS, DEBORA,, New Year's greeting 1946
DUYVIS, DEBORA,
New Year's greeting 1946
A boy climbing stairs, with a sack with the year 1946 printed on it, combs the beard of an old man leaning on a sword and holding scales. Behind the man, in flames, the years 1940 to 1945 rise up. This refers to the end of the second world war, and is accompanied by the caption 'Kam uit de klis, eert slimmer is'. This in turn references Jan Luyken's series of prints of occupations, and specifically the comb maker. Etching and stipple work with plate tone, on wove paper. Sheet size 176 x 120 mm., platemark 126 x 92 mm. Made by Debora Duyvis after her own design, signed in pencil lower right. Debora Duyvis (Amsterdam 1886 - 1974) was a Dutch painter, illustrator and graphic artist. She was a student of J.J. Aarts and Antoon Derkinderen. In good condition, the image area lightly browned from matting. This is from the collection of Jeanne Bieruma Oosting, another painter and graphic artist from the Netherlands. Her collection mark (not in Lugt) is on the matting and the lower left corner of the print.
