"Adams originally began telling the story that would become Watership Down to his two daughters on a car trip. They eventually insisted that he publish it as a book. He began writing in 1966, taking two years to complete it. In 1972, after four publishers and three writers' agencies turned down the manuscript, Rex Collings agreed to publish the work. The book gained international acclaim almost immediately for reinvigorating anthropomorphic fiction with naturalism. Over the next few years Watership Down sold over a million copies worldwide. Adams won both of the most prestigious British children's book awards, one of six authors to do so: the Carnegie Medal and the Guardian Children's Fiction Prize. In 1974, following publication of his second novel, Shardik, he left the Civil Service to become a full-time author. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature in 1975." BONNOT, PAUL, The Sea Lions, Seals, and Sea Otter of the California Coast October 1951; Vol. 37, No. 4
BONNOT, PAUL
The Sea Lions, Seals, and Sea Otter of the California Coast October 1951; Vol. 37, No. 4
Sacramento, CA: California Division of Fish and Game, 1951. offprint. Pamphlet. Illustrated by Hester Bonnot. B&W Illustrations; This is a trade sized pamphlet with self covers and a stapled spine. The pamphlet is in Very Good+ condition and was issued without a dust jacket. There is a previous owner's address label on the top front cover. The text pages are clean and bright. " “Writing in the Nature Magazine for October, Paul Bonnot, a scientific investigator employed by the commercial fisheries Bureau of the Division of Fish and Game, gives an illuminating picture of the sea lions of the Pacific Coast. Bonnot probably knows more about sea lions and their habits than anyone on the Pacific Coast and he is emphatic in his championing of their cause. Due to Bonnet's investigation the theory that sea lions are a menace to the fishing industry has been exploded, he declares, and his studies disclosed that the sea lions have aided the industry as they generally eat fish that are of little benefit. A recent movement to have the sea lions slaughtered wholesale was doubtless stopped by the publication throughout the State of the results of his investigation of conditions. According to Bonnet's article, there are probably nine thousand of both species, Steller's sea lion and the California sea lion on the California Coast. ” " (October 25, 1929 [Mill Valley Record]). Callenbach's Ecotopian concept is not "Luddite" — he does not reject high technology, but rather his fictional society shows a conscious selectivity about technology. In Ecotopia ecologically compatible high-technology exists alongside postmaterialistic attitudes and lifestyles. As an example, with its emphasis on personal rather than impersonal interaction, Callenbach's Ecotopian society anticipates the development and liberal usage of videoconferencing. " (from Wikipedia). Wild Flowers of the West
Los Angeles, CA: Richfield Oil Corporation, 1953. Stapled wraps. Color Illustrations; This is an ephemeral giveaway from Richfield Oil Company (presumably for customers out west). This is a larger than trade sized paperback with illustrated covers and a stapled spine. The book is in Very Good- condition and was issued without a dust jacket. "The Richfield Oil Corporation was founded in 1905, and opened its first automotive service station in Los Angeles in 1917. After quick expansion, Richfield Oil Corp fell to the Great Depression and went into receivership in 1931. Cities Service Company (now known as Citgo) offered one share of stock for every four Richfield's[6] and acquired a majority of the stock. Consolidated Oil Corporation (in 1943 renamed Sinclair Oil Corp) , in 1932, offered to buy Richfield Oil. While this offer was not accepted, Harry Ford Sinclair, president of Consolidated Oil, continued to pursue Richfield Oil and prevented Standard Oil of California (now known as Chevron) from taking over the company. Consolidated Oil Corp, in 1935, bought Richfield's eastern United States operations. This maneuver removed Standard Oil of California's interest in Richfield Oil. The east coast gas stations would later be rebranded as Sinclair stations. Richfield Oil Corp emerged from receivership in 1936, after Rio Grande controlled by Consolidated Oil Corp and Cities Service Company agreed to a merger between Richfield Oil and Rio Grande." ) (from Wikipedia). The killer whale was sold for $8,000 to Ted Griffin, a Seattle public aquarium owner. Named after his place of capture, Namu was the subject of a film that changed some people's attitudes toward orcas. A few months later, Griffin procured a companion for Namu: a very young, 14 foot (4.25 m) , 2000 lb (900 kg) orca captured off Penn Cove, Puget Sound, Washington. Shamu means 'Friend of Namu' (alternately 'She-Namu'). However, Shamu did not get along with Namu and so was sold to SeaWorld in San Diego in December 1965. " (from Wikipedia); Signed by Associated. "In the 1890s, Parsons hiked around California with the botanical artist Margaret Warriner Buck, with a view to publishing a book about California flora. The result was the very successful The Wild Flowers of California: Their Names, Haunts, and Habits (1897) , written by Parsons with over 100 illustrations engraved from Buck's pen-and-ink drawings. It went through many printings and several editions and was still being reprinted into the 1950s. Parsons intended her book to complement Mrs. William Starr Dana's very successful How to Know the Wild Flowers (1893) by emphasizing plants that were unknown in the eastern United States where Mrs. Dana lived. With Mrs. Dana's permission, she used the same plan of arranging the flowers by color. The botanist Alice Eastwood and the nurseryman Carl Purdy served as advisers on the project. " (from Wikipedia).
