Charles le Clerc..., Pierre Morissett..., Antoine-Urrain Coutelier..., 1715. 12mo, 159 x 94 mms., pp. [xvi], 584 [585 - 602 index], contemporary calf, spine ornately gilt in compartments, red leather label; base of spine wormed, top of spine chipped and spine a little dried, but a decent copy from the Easton Neston Library, with the contemporary autograph "Louis Chabanel" on the verso of the leaf preceding the title-page. Francois Pomey (1618 - 1673) was probably best-known to 18th century English readers as the author of the work usually translated as The Pantheon (Pantheon Mythicum); he was also distinguished for his Latin-French dictionary.

FIRST EDITION. 2 volumes. 8vo, 210 x 123 mms., pp. [ii], iv, 321 [322 blank]; 320, vi [vii - xv list of subscribers, xvi blank] contemporary tree calf, gilt spines, red morocco lables; tops and bases of spines slight chipped, joints very slightly cracked. The work was also published in an English translation by H. North the next year, published by Cadell and Davies and also dedicated to Lady Barbara Pleydell-Bouverie. The list of subscribers in volume 2 is almost exclusively British, including, Lady Barbara herself, Edmund Burke and William Wilberforce, and an unusually large number of female subscribers. Tressan's concern is that of distinguishing mythology from history and ensuring that the former does not become identified with the latter. ESTC T142676 locates copies in the BL, Bodleian, Oxford Taylor; and California State Sutro.
