Early coal mining in picture and story in the land of the Mollie Maguires. There was constant labor trouble with members of the "Mollie Maguires". The Philadelphia & Reading Coal & Iron Company purchased the mining firm in 1871. An underground fire on August 19, 1884 caused the death of 7 men and a 15 year old door boy lost his life below the surface, before fire was flooded with water from Shamokin Creek. The colliery was abandoned in 1886.
