Centre International d'Etude des Textiles Anciens
Bulletin de Liaison Du Centre International D'étude Des Textiles Anciens - No 39-40
Lyon, France, Centre International d'Etude des Textiles Anciens, 1974. Softcover. Blue wraps with black text. vi. 1-258 pp. Chiefly text, some bw illustrations. "The Bulletin containing Miss Shepherd's article is finally published. We sincerely apologize for its delay, but considering that the Abegg Stiftung, by its own admission, took three years to prepare the three articles in Bulletin 37, it is not surprising that Miss Shepherd took a year and a half to gather the documents and conduct the scientific research that form the bulk of her refutation. In the introduction to Bulletin 38, we already emphasized the importance of the documentation gathered on Buyid silks. It goes without saying that Miss Shepherd's article now provides us with new and valuable information that must have required considerable effort, for which we deserve to thank her." - from introduction Contents - Medieval Persian Silks in Fact and Fancy. Lyon, France, Centre International d'Etude des Textiles Anciens, 1973. Softcover. Blue wraps with black text. vi. (2) 3-145 pp. Chiefly text, some bw illustrations. "This Bulletin will probably seem a little particular to our readers in the sense that it deals with only one subject, namely the collection of Buyid silks kept at the Abegg Stiftung in Bern. This foundation conceives some doubts about the authenticity of the majority of these fabrics, and I am pleased to pay tribute to the loyalty it shows by bringing to the attention of the public the reports that have been written on this issue by Mrs. Flury-Lemberg, Mrs. Hofenk-de Graaff, and Mr. Vial" - from introduction Contents - The Buyid Silks of the Abegg Foundation, Berne. Corinne Muhlemann
Complex Weaves Technique, Text and Cultural History of Striped Silks
Affalterach, Germany, Didymos-Verlag, 2023. Hardcover. Hardcover green with color reproduction (detail). 288 pp generously illustrated with diagrams, BW and color reproductions. "Silk fabrics in the form of wearables and soft furnishings were omnipresent in medieval Islamic society, yet their presence has not always been acknowledged within the field of art history. Complex Weaves considers the interwoven historiography of textile studies and Islamic art history through focusing on lampas fabrics produced in the Mongol (Ilkhanate, Chagatai Khanate) and Mamluk territories during the 13th and 14th centuries. Attending to these complex striped silks offers new perspectives on the production, consumption, and intended use of medieval textiles. By analysing the different weaving techniques, the Arabic inscriptions in the patterns of the striped silks as well as their representation in pictorial and written sources, Complex Weaves critically examines the technological knowledge and divisions of labour required to produce lampas fabrics. The iconography, materiality, and inscriptions of striped silks are placed in conversation with 13th century metal vessels and contextualized through the varied uses of wearable silks. From robes of honour (khil'a, tashr f) for the S q (cup-bearer) to the textile propaganda of the Ab Sa' d silk, the incorporation of specific silks was instrumental in constructing talismanic power and political messages. Silks affected both those who wore them, and those who observed them, offering researchers insight into Islamic art history"-- Includes bibliographical references (pages 267-279) and index./ Bio/History: Corinne Mühlemann is the Assistant Professor for the History of Textile Arts (Abegg-Stiftung professorship) at the University of Bern, Switzerland. She has been a Marie-Sk odowska-Curie Individual Fellow at the Centre for Textile Research at the University of Copenhagen. Her research contributes to the fields of textile studies and Islamic art history. VG+ .
