The seventh edition of this uncommon work in a full calf binding. Illustrated with a portrait frontispiece of the author, with a facsimile of his signature. A scriptural dictionary written in Welsh by the Calvinistic Methodist clergyman Thomas Charles (1755-1814), during a time when there was a scarcity in Welsh bibles. He was an important influence in Wales, creating the concept of the Welsh Circulating Schools and encouraging the spread of Methodism. In a full calf binding. Externally sound, with rubbing to the boards, extremities, joints and spine. Leather is splitting to the joints and spine label, not affecting the lettering. Loss to the tail of the spine. Hinges are strained but the cords are holding firm. Lacking the front free end paper. Rear free end paper is detached but intact. Otherwise, internally, firmly bound. The second volume only of the three volume second edition of this work from English barrister, clergyman and writer Martin Madan.In 1780, Madan raised a storm of opposition by the publication of his 'Thelyphthora', in which he advocated polygamy as the remedy for the evils of society. Arising from his acquaintance with the plight of the unfortunate inmates of the Lock Hospital, and with his arguments based mainly on scriptural authority, the crux of his case was expressed in a single sentence: 'Every man who has seduced a woman, whether with or without a promise of marriage, should be obliged to wed her publicly&apos.His book caused many angry replies. Amongst them was 'Anti-Thelyphthora' by his first cousin, the poet William Cowper, which was published anonymously. Endpapers renewed. In a half calf binding, with marbled paper covered boards.
