Baines, Thomas.
The Landing of the British Settlers in Algoa Bay in the Year 1820.
King George VI Art Gallery, Port Elizabeth, nd. Framed. Produced on 215 gsm China Embossed Natural paper. Image size 535mm x 380mm, overall print size 575mm x 420mm, framed size 730mm x 585mm. Attractive copy in excellent frame. Sold framed (not recommended for overseas sale due to freight costs). This famous picture illustrates a moment from the seminal event in the history of Eastern Cape settlement: the landing of the first sizable contingent of English settlers on the subcontinent. At the foot of the rise above the Bay are the tents that would shelter the 1820 Settlers temporarily, along with the wagons for their conveyance to the hinterland. The flag of the garrison at Fort Frederick is visible at the crest of the hill overlooking the scene. In the foreground, lighters laden with Settler men, women and children are battling through the waves from the notoriously unsafe anchorage. Cormorants soar above the waves, and swoop down. A breathtaking scene.

Note Cathcart in dress uniform on a white charger at the extreme left of the painting. In February 1853, Sandile and the other chiefs surrendered. The 8th frontier war was the most bitter and brutal in the series of Xhosa wars. It lasted over two years and ended in the complete subjugation of the Ciskei Xhosa.

Baines, Thomas.
River Crossing 1852.
Limited Edition, No. 469 of 500. Heritage Fine Art 1976. Framed. Image size 370mm wide x 255mm high, framed size 610mm x 505mm. Attractive copy in excellent frame Sold framed (not recommended for overseas sale due to freight costs). A full-colour reproduction of the oil on canvas by Thomas Baines (undated). The original is in the possession of The Royal Green Jackets (Rifle) Museum in Winchester, UK. This illustrates the Rifle Brigade crossing a river. It is likely that this is the Orange River and that the picture is representative of Cathcart’s forces crossing the river in his campaign against Moshoeshoe in Lesotho. One wagon has crossed the river and is on its way, another is waiting to cross, one has come to grief in the mud, and men are crossing having removed their boots and trousers to avoid getting too wet!
