Los Angeles, Touring Bureau Route and Map Service, Automobile Club of Southern California, 1920. First Edition. Two maps, n. d. (1920); 10 1/2 x 3 3/4; beige card stock, printed in black; small creases to corners; a minor spot to lower margin of one of the maps; very good condition. Early 20th century road maps, they detailed the routes from Truckee, by Lake Tahoe, north to Clio, Plumas County. It also showed rivers, terrain elevations, hotels and gas stations, and so on. Not in OCLC; not in the trade (as of December 2018). Very good .

Dietzgen Map Measure (Opisometer)
Switzerland (La Chaux-de-Fonds), Derby S. A. 1940. Opisometer in its original box, n. d. (ca 1940); instrument - 4 3/4 (length with handle) by 1 1/2 (dimater of dial); box - 1 3/4 x 5 x 1/2; instructions pasted to top of the box; opisometer with very minor wear - in near fine condition; box with a bit of wear to edges and corners - in about very good condition. In 1858, Swiss watchmaker Wuilleumier Freres founded his business, specializing in automatic watches and measuring instruments. The company would move and be renamed several times, before acquiring the "Derby S. A." name in 1939. Freres patented and produced curvimeters as early as 1898. This particular one, with dials in both centimeters and inches, was designed to measure and calculate miles, kilometers, and versts on maps. Very good .

Washington DC, Published by Order of the Secretary of War, 1873. First Edition. Six maps for: Monday, February 17, 1873 - 11 P. M.; Tuesday, February 18, 1873 - 7:35 A. M.; Tuesday, February 18, 1873 - 4:35 P. M.; Wednesday, February 19, 1873 - 7:35 A. M.; Wednesday, February 19, 1873 - 4:35 P. M.; Wednesday, February 19, 1873 - 11 P. M.; 8 3/4 x 11 1/2; relief shown by hachures and gradient tints; small reference table in the lower half of the image; edges brittle, with small chips and cuts; overall in good to very good condition. A scarce collection of maps, their publication began in January of 1871, with no less than 3 maps being published every day. Samuel Morse's invention of the telegraph had made it possible to easily observe, gather, and transmit data from different points over the entire country. A small note at the head read: "All observations made at the same moment of actual (not local) time." Released by the US Army's Signal Service, the maps were intented to be primarily used by farmers and merchants. They were published in at least three different sizes and formats, the current being one of the smaller ones. These particular maps showed precipitation and wind velocity at various elevation points. Good .
