ALVAREZ, EDUARDO G.
Caseros ó 3 de Febrero de 1852
Montevideo: Imprenta Y Encuadernaciónal Libro Inglés, 1897. First Edition. Contemporary quarter calf with marbled boards. Contemporary marbled endpapers. Slight foxing to some pages. Pages yellowed as normal for age. Slight rubbing to spine. Slight wear to spine, covers & corners. ; Eduardo G. Alvarez's "Caseros ó 3 de febrero de 1852" is a concise historical account published in Montevideo by Imprenta El libro inglés in 1897. This 28-page work examines the pivotal Battle of Caseros, which occurred near Buenos Aires on February 3, 1852. The book details the conflict between the Army of Buenos Aires commanded by Juan Manuel de Rosas and the Grand Army (Ejército Grande) led by Justo José de Urquiza, which ultimately resulted in Rosas's defeat and exile to England. The Battle of Caseros marked a decisive turning point in Argentine history. The conflict pitted the forces of Juan Manuel de Rosas, governor of Buenos Aires province who had effectively ruled Argentina as a dictator since 1835, against a coalition consisting of the Argentine provinces of Entre Ríos and Corrientes, the Empire of Brazil, and Uruguay. Urquiza's army of approximately 24,000 men, including 3,500 Brazilians and 1,500 Uruguayans, overwhelmed Rosas's forces of 10,000 infantry and 12,000 cavalry. The six-hour battle resulted in approximately 2,000 casualties, with 1,500 of these being Rosistas, and an additional 7,000 of Rosas's men captured in combat. The historical significance of this battle cannot be overstated. After Rosas fled to exile in the United Kingdom, Urquiza emerged as the provisional Director of the Argentine Confederation. This transition of power set in motion a period known as "National Organization," leading to the San Nicolás Agreement that called for the creation of Argentina's first true national constitution. This constitution, established in 1853, became the foundation for the modern Argentine state and remains the basis for the current constitution. However, the battle's aftermath was not without complications. The ruling elite in Buenos Aires aspired to maintain their traditional political and economic dominance over the other provinces, resulting in a decade-long separation between the Argentine Confederation and the State of Buenos Aires. While both entities claimed to be part of a single nation, they functioned essentially as separate states. Complete national unification would not be achieved until 1880, following years of continued civil conflicts. Alvarez's work, though brief, stands as an important historical document chronicling this watershed moment that transformed Argentina's political landscape from a loosely connected confederation dominated by a strongman to a constitutional republic with more formalized governance structures. BRACKENRIDGE, H. M.
Voyage to Buenos Ayres, Performed in the Years 1817 and 1818, by Order of the American Government
London: Printed for Sir Richard Phillips and Co, 1820. First Edition. Modern cloth. Deckle-edged. In a modern cloth binding with new endpapers and paper title label on spine. Slight foxing to title page, last page and some others. Slight wear to spine, covers & corners. ; Henry Marie Brackenridge’s Voyage to Buenos Aires (1820) chronicles his diplomatic mission to South America during Argentina’s struggle for independence. Commissioned by the U. S. Government in 1817, Brackenridge aimed to assess the political stability and economic potential of the newly declared United Provinces of South America. His account provides a vivid portrayal of Buenos Aires as a dynamic hub of revolutionary fervor, blending European cultural influences with burgeoning republican ideals. The book captures the chaotic yet hopeful atmosphere of a society transitioning from colonial rule to self-governance, while documenting the challenges of consolidating independence amidst royalist resistance and regional factionalism. The work stands out for its ethnographic and political observations. Brackenridge details Buenos Aires’ urban life, contrasting its bustling port and cosmopolitan elite with the rural hinterlands dominated by gauchos and Indigenous communities. He analyzes the social hierarchies inherited from Spanish colonialism, critiquing the entrenched privileges of criollo elites and the marginalization of mixed-race populations. His descriptions of revolutionary institutions, such as the Congress of Tucumán (1816) , highlight both the idealism of republican leaders and the fragility of their governance structures. Economically, Brackenridge emphasizes the Río de la Plata region’s untapped potential, advocating for U. S. Trade partnerships to exploit its agricultural and mineral resources. He envisions Buenos Aires as a strategic gateway for American commerce but warns of instability if inequality persists. The book also reflects early U. S. Diplomatic pragmatism, balancing support for Latin American independence with caution toward premature recognition—a stance shaped by geopolitical tensions with Spain and European powers. As a historical document, Voyage to Buenos Aires bridges hemispheric narratives of revolution. Brackenridge frames Argentina’s struggle as an extension of Enlightenment ideals, drawing parallels to the American Revolution while underscoring the unique challenges of postcolonial state-building. His insights informed U. S. Policymakers and merchants, laying groundwork for future engagement. The book remains a vital primary source, capturing the interplay of ambition and uncertainty in an era of transformative change. ; 23.9 x 15 x 1.3 cms; iv, 116 pages. Very Good with no dust jacket .

OLIVEIRA LIMA, M. DE
Pernambuco. Seu Desenvolvimento Historico

Endpapers marbled and with Brazilian booksellers label on front pastedown. New papers inserted between original endpapers and bookblock, so book was expertly repaired at one point in its history. Some pages with underlining in pencil. Bottom corners somewhat worn & slightly damaged. Slight wear & slight soiling to spine, covers & corners. ; Manuel de Oliveira Lima’s Pernambuco Seu Desenvolvimento Histórico (1895) is a seminal study of northeastern Brazil’s socio-political evolution, blending positivist theory with regional analysis. Written during the author’s diplomatic career, the book positions Pernambuco as a microcosm of Brazil’s colonial and post-independence struggles. Oliveira Lima frames Portuguese colonization as a “civilizing mission, ” crediting the monarchy and church for implanting European institutions while critiquing enduring social hierarchies. Central to his thesis is Pernambuco’s economic prominence during the sugar boom (16th–17th centuries) , which fostered a distinct regional identity marked by intellectual dynamism and political dissent, exemplified by the 1817 Revolution—a failed but ideologically significant uprising against Portuguese rule. The work traces Pernambuco’s transition from sugar monoculture to a diversified agrarian economy in the 18th and 19th centuries. Oliveira Lima links this shift to global market forces, particularly British industrialization, which spurred demand for cotton and tobacco. He critiques the senhores de engenho (plantation elites) for perpetuating colonial-era inequalities, including slavery, even as they championed liberal ideals. The 1817 Revolution, while inspired by Enlightenment principles, is portrayed as a paradox: though it sought independence and constitutionalism, its leadership excluded marginalized groups like Afro-Brazilians and the rural poor, limiting its transformative potential. Oliveira Lima emphasizes Pernambuco’s intellectual networks, highlighting transatlantic exchanges with European thinkers that shaped regional politics. He praises Dom João VI’s reforms, such as the 1808 opening of Brazilian ports, for integrating Pernambuco into global trade and fostering modernization. The book also reassesses colonial legacies, challenging nationalist narratives that dismissed Portuguese rule as inept. Instead, Oliveira Lima credits the monarchy with establishing administrative cohesion, arguing that Brazil’s post-independence stability under Emperor Pedro I stemmed from these colonial foundations. Historically, Pernambuco Seu Desenvolvimento Histórico pioneered comparative methods in Brazilian scholarship, contrasting Pernambuco’s trajectory with Spanish American republics. While reflecting 19th-century Eurocentric biases, the work anticipates later debates about regionalism and national identity. Oliveira Lima’s analysis of economic systems, social stratification, and the tension between centralization and regional autonomy remains influential, offering a bridge between colonial history and modern Brazilian state-building. His nuanced portrayal of Pernambuco’s past underscores the complexities of a region that shaped—and was shaped by—the contradictions of empire and republicanism. ; 22.7 x 14.2 x 2.2 cms; xiv, 327 pages.
