Chromolithograph on paper (20-3/4" x 16-1/2") in wood frame (25-1/4" x 20-3/4") depicting the first nationwide wildcat strike in American history, the Great Railroad Strike of 1877. Workers and their families battled with state militia sent from Philadelphia in this most deadly and costly strike in Pittsburgh's history. Persuaded by Pennsylvania Railroad President Thomas Scott, Pennsylvania Governor John Hartranft requested that the federal government send troops to end the fighting. Concerned about the great power of the railroads, Hartranft later called for the recognition of labor unions. The text at the bottom of the image is a list of the dead as a result of the strike. Scarce and important image in the history of workers' rights in America. Short closed tear at top edge; minor horizontal tears and creases through center. Very Good, not examined out of frame .
