The Pinkas Synagogue : A Memorial of the Past and of our Days
Prague, Statni Zidovske Muzeum. 1955, First Edition. Hardcover. Book, Jewish monuments in Bohemia and Moravia series , v.1, pt. 2. By Hana Volavkova with the cooperation of the members of the research staff of the State Jewish Museum in Prague. This report on the architectural restoration of the Pinkas Synagogue in Prague is written to draw attention to the work being done for the creation of a memorial to the Seventy Seven Thousand Two Hundred and Ninety Seven; What form the memorial will take; and the architectural, cultural, historical associations. Tragedy overtook Europe's Jewish minority in the years 1938-1945. In Bohemia and Moravia alone 77,297 Jewish men, women, and children perished. Their names with all the obtainable data of birth, death, and date of transport have been gathered and will be inscribed on the walls of the Pinkas Synagogue, the shine now destined to their memory. The history of the Jews in Bohemia and Moravia begins in the 9th to 10th centuries and the oldest finds made of the Pinkas Synagogue date from that time. They throw light on the dim picture we have of medieval synagogues. English translation: by Greta Hort. 147p.maps, diagrams + 68 photographic plates. Nice Decorative linen binding, Bookplate of previous owner inside front cover. Fine.
