ALTSHULER, DAVID [ED]
The Precious Legacy: Judaic Treasures from the Czechoslovak State Collection
New York, Summit Books. 1983, First Pbk.Ed.. (ISBN: 0671494988) Soft cover. Book, "The collection of the Czechoslovak State Jewish Museum in Prague is a unique repository of historic artifacts, artistic rarities, and cultural memories. These objects document the vitality and significance of Czech Jewry, which has flourished for a for a millennium at the crossroads of East and West and is the oldest continuous Jewish community in Europe. One hundred fifty-three local Jewish communities in Bohemia and Moravia were devastated during the Holocaust, and thus the Prague Museum bears eloquent testimony to a world virtually snuffed out just one generation ago. This book brings to American audiences their first glimpse of this extraordinary collection of Judaica in conjunction with an exhibition that is touring our nation's major museums under the auspices of the Smithsonian Institution Travelling Exhibition Service" 288p+plates, bibliography. index NOTE: Heavy [1.1 kg] oversIzed volume [25x 20x 2.5 cm]. VOLAVKOVA, HANA
The Pinkas Synagogue : A Memorial of the Past and of our Days
Prague, Statni Zidovske Muzeum. 1955, First Edition. Hardcover. Book, Jewish monuments in Bohemia and Moravia series , v.1, pt. 2. By Hana Volavkova with the cooperation of the members of the research staff of the State Jewish Museum in Prague. This report on the architectural restoration of the Pinkas Synagogue in Prague is written to draw attention to the work being done for the creation of a memorial to the Seventy Seven Thousand Two Hundred and Ninety Seven; What form the memorial will take; and the architectural, cultural, historical associations. Tragedy overtook Europe's Jewish minority in the years 1938-1945. In Bohemia and Moravia alone 77,297 Jewish men, women, and children perished. Their names with all the obtainable data of birth, death, and date of transport have been gathered and will be inscribed on the walls of the Pinkas Synagogue, the shine now destined to their memory. The history of the Jews in Bohemia and Moravia begins in the 9th to 10th centuries and the oldest finds made of the Pinkas Synagogue date from that time. They throw light on the dim picture we have of medieval synagogues. English translation: by Greta Hort. 147p.maps, diagrams + 68 photographic plates. Nice Decorative linen binding, Bookplate of previous owner inside front cover. Fine.

WATTS, IRENE N.
Clay Man: The Golem of Prague
Toronto, Tundra Books. 2009, First Canadian Edition. (ISBN: 9780887768804) Hardcover. Ill.: Kathryn E. Shoemaker. Book, It is 1595, and the rabbi's son Jacob is frustrated with having to live in the walled ghetto known as Jewish Town. Why can't he venture outside of the gates and explore the beautiful city? His father warns him that Passover is a dangerous time to be a Jew and that the people from outside accuse the Jews of dreadful deeds. But one night, Jacob follows his father and two companions as they unlock the ghetto gates and proceed to the river, where they mold a human shape from the mud of the riverbank. When the rabbi speaks strange words, the shape is infused with life and the Golem of Prague is born. In this breathtaking retelling of a timeless tale, Irene N. Watts's beautiful words are complemented by the haunting black-and-white images of artist Kathryn E. Shoemaker. New/New.
