Jones, Mrs. C. S.; Williams, Henry T.
Beautiful Homes. How to Make Them
Rockford, Ill, Rockford Publishing Co. 1885. First edition thus (first part published separately in 1878); 8 x 5 1/2; pp. [7], vi-x, [1], xii-xvi, [1], 4-314, [3], 6-300, [2]; embossed mustard cloth over boards, decorated in gilt and black; illustrated with numerous engravings; rubbed spots to corners and tips of spine; lacking ffep, else complete; hinges a bit weak; repair to title page and occasional smudging to margins; in about good condition. An exceedingly-scarce Victorian work on interior design and furnishing, published at the height of the Aesthetic Movement, it contained two distinctive parts - the first dealing with furniture, wallpaper, carpets, etc. for each room and the second - with window treatment, flower arrangements, lamp shades, embroidered seats, and so on. Of particular interest was the exhaustive sections on curtains and draperies, as given the 19th-century's rapid succession of revival styles, coming to and falling out of fashion, it usually meant that drapery designs were almost never published in books, but were rather issued as groups of plates, to be used and then discarded. Good .
