VG+ condition in VG dustwrapper (slight wear top of spine, no loss). Copy No.642 of 1000. Drummond came to Africa as a young man (he was killed in Zululand 1879). The book was written to serve as a guide for those intending to visit Africa to shoot game at a time when hunters' weapons were primitive. Most hunting was then done on horseback but he hunted on foot. Contains separate chapters on buffalo, rhinoceros, eland, elephant, lions, leopards, hunting with dogs, anecdotes of antelopes, and game birds.

Teg, fore and lower edges roughcut. Boards and spine show intensive insect depredations, thus unattractive. Several ownership inscriptions to feps. All plates present. Foxing throughout especially to preliminary and end pages, the plates have generally escaped this except by offset from an adjacent page. A sound reading copy This relates to the Author's hunting and military exploits (but contains no references to Africa). An interesting text with much on native life in the area where he travelled. Extremely scarce in the original edition.

No inscriptions. damp storage mark lower corner front board only, shelf wear lower edges. A mite of insect attack to lower area of ffep and some tanning to the half-title page only, else the facsimile contents are Fine end to end. The dustwrapper is VG+, marks show, but there is no loss, no tears, no chips, minor rubbing and marks; no major faults but accumulated small faults render it only just less than pristine. Overall an above average copy. ISBN: 9780620083928 This is a near same-size facsimile edition (17" high versus 21" of the original elephant folio), not to be confused with one of the other smaller reduced-size editions. The consummate hunter's hunter, Harris slaughtered game in quantities that no one else was ever able to match - mainly because in later years all the game had gone.
