The Race - Jerome Park N. Y
New York, Thomas Kelly, 1869. First Edition. Print. Scarce hand-colored lithograph (28” x 22” matted and framed to an overall size of 34" x 27"), one of a series of four prints published by Kelly and printed by Wm. C. Robertson of Jerome Park, site of the inaugural Belmont Stakes in 1867. The other three views were FALSE START, SADDLING, and RETURNING TO WEIGH. All are uncommon. The oldest of America's three Triple Crown races, the Belmont Stakes was first run on June 19, 1867, at the Jerome Park race course (named after owner Leonard W. Jerome), an oddly shaped, English-style track in The Bronx that required its runners to negotiate three turns instead of two because of a dip in the middle of the backstretch. A filly, Ruthless, won the first Belmont's $1,850 winner’s purse, outlasting DeCourcey by a head. The race has been run annually ever since (the last race at Jerome Park was in 1890), with the exception of 1911 and '12, and the Belmont has established itself as the ultimate test of championship stamina in this country. Small archival linen tape repairs on the reverse used to strengthen the paper where torn at the margins, two tears going into the image slightly; mild dampstain lower right corner, dampstain at left center margin, small circular stain top center, light foxing spread across the left side, scattered soiling. Quite attractive and now nicely matted and framed .

ANDREWS, Henry C
The Botanist's Repository, for New, and Rare Plants. Containing Coloured Figures of Such Plants, As Have Not Hitherto Appeared in Any Similar Publication...
London, T. Bensley for the author, 1797-1815. First Edition. Hardcover. Twelve large quarto volumes (8-1/2" x 10-1/2") volumes consisting of volumes 1-6 bound in full green morocco leather gilt with all edges gilt and volumes 5-10 in half brown morocco with marbled boards and matching morocco corners, gilt-lettered spines; marbled endpapers. A complete 10-volume set made up from two different incomplete sets resulting in duplicate volumes of 5 and 6 resulting in a total of 12 volumes. Duplicate text for plate 291 with no text for plate 290. Started as a rival to Curtis's THE BOTANICAL MAGAZINE, this magazine featured more new plants than its rival and larger and generally better quality plates. It also differed in making a contribution of lasting importance to the literature of botany and horticulture by providing records and means of identification of a great diversity of beautiful and interesting plants, many of them new to science. The text of the fifth volume is by John Kennedy (the author's father-in-law), the sixth volume by A. H. Haworth, and the last four volumes by George Jackson. DUNTHORNE 8: "A fine and interesting work of distinct individuality and character"; GREAT FLOWER BOOKS, page 83; NISSEN 2382; PRITZEL 474. Truly magnificent hand-colored plates and quite scarce. Fairly large copy in comparison to others sold in the recent past. Occasional minor foxing, toning, or off-setting; some light pencil notes/corrections to some leaves. In all, rather clean and attractive examples of these volumes with the plates generally bright and vivid with offsetting to text. Rubbing and light scuffs to bindings. Near Fine A beautifully illustrated and important horticulture title providing records and means of identification of a great diversity of beautiful and interesting plants, many of them from Australia and South Africa and many new to science.

DOWNING, A[ndrew] J[ackson]
The Fruits and Fruit Trees of America; or, the Culture, Propagation, and Management, in the Garden and Orchard, of Fruit Trees Generally; with Descriptions of All the Finest Varieties of Fruit, Native and Foreign, Cultivated in This Country
New York, John Wiley, 1850. First Edition. Hardcover. Quarto in 6s (6" x 9-3-16") bound in contemporary half morocco leather with matching corners, gilt-ruled green boards, gilt-lettered and decorated spine, top edge gilt; xiv, 594 pages. Illustrated with 69 hand-colored lithograph plates by Lemercier of Paris and over 200 wood-engraved illustrations in the text. THE FIRST EDITION WITH COLORED PLATES of the most important and influential book on pomology published in America. First published in 1845, the book went through some 20 editions until 1900. All of the early editions are rare, and only two, published in 1847 and 1850, contain color plates and are also printed on larger paper. The plates were colored by hand and finished by Lemercier of Paris from drawings made in America. The text makes no reference to these exquisite color plates of apples, pears, cherries, plums, berries, and other fruits, and as Plesch (page 219) says, they "seem to have crept into the volume by stealth." It has been supposed that there was no fixed edition; perhaps copies were put together as the demand warranted, and as a result the plate count varies from copy to copy. Both the Plesch and the Bennett (page 35) 1850 copies, for example, had 69 plates, as does this copy. The only other copy recently on the market contained 67 plates. The text is lightly to moderately foxed throughout, a bit less so to the color plates. Paper split to the front hinge but the covers are very tight. Rebacked with most of the original spine laid down. Very Good .
