Portland, Me. Chisholm Bros. 1895. Oblong 8vo. Hardcover. Green cloth, gold and black decoration. No date, circa 1895. Accordion fold format, 30 panels of Washingt views in sepia tone. Edgewear and scuffing to cover, 1/2 inch abrasion to corner of front cover, illustrations are all in sound condition, some chipping to rear endpaper gutter. Over 100 views of Washington, plus portraits of all Presidents through Benjamin Harrison's term 1889-1893, and a centerfold chromolithograph of the Capitol dome. Good.

Endpapers are lightly foxed and text is age-toned, and has a very occasional spot, binding is tight, map is in clean, crisp condition. Background and descriptions of Washington's buildings and institutions, along with illustrations. Very Good.

Hardcover. 172pp. Brown stamped boards, gilt lettering and decoration to spine.Front board is detached but present, spine is chipped (no missing text), a bit of damp staining to some margins and text is mildly age-toned, text block is sound, former owner's name on front free endpaper. The author provides much information and instruction to immigrants to the United States during mid nineteenth century, extolling the virtues of life in the American democracy. Some of the topics covered are topography, demographics, government and laws, occupations, currency, and a section devoted to travel directions by rail and ferry to specific destinations. It is a remarkably comprehensive, yet compact introduction to newcomers to the United States nearly two centuries ago. Good.
