Shepherd playing a transverse flute while riding a cow. Shepherdess walking close to him, dancing on the notes he plays. Stream of water in the center towards the back. Ruines on the left, a dog on the right. On the background mountains. Two girls wearing head-scarves, meet and chat in a dark forest. One of the girls has a bundle of sticks in her apron. Tone lithograph on wove paper, sheet size 225 x 298 mm., image size 179 x 249 mm. Lithographed after his own design by Jacob Jan van der Maaten, and printed by C.W. Mieling, c. 1865. Jacob Jan van der Maaten (Elburg 1820-1879 Apeldoorn) was a Dutch lithographer, watercolorist, etcher and painter. He was a student of Hendrik van de Sande Bakhuyzen, and a member of the Haagsche Etsclub, and one of the founders of Pulchri Studio. In very good condition, in matting.

Zomer
"Summer"; two farmers with scythes, harvesting grain in a fied. Etching and drypoint with plate tone, on wove paper, mounted on board. Sheet size 731 x 558 mm., platemark 545 x 381 mm. Etched by Leon Senf, and printed by Roeloffzen-Hüber en van Santen, Amsterdam, ca. 1870-1940. Leon Senf (Delft 1860-1940 Alkmaar) was a Dutch painter, lithgrapher, echer, designer and ceramist. As a ceramist he was employed by De Porceleyne Fles (Delft) where he would rise to the position of Chef d'Atelier. In other artistic fields he was autodidact. In fair condition, all margins stained (probably from the glue attaching the sheet to the carrier board). One stain in the image area, top right. Some small surface damages in the image area. An impressive atmospheric print, in sadly not such a great condition.

Frontispiece to a set of 26 etchings with various landscapes. Plates were reworked over time. An old city gate at the center with two figures walking towards the opening; 'the city walls have crumbled to the point that the portal seems superfluous, merely signifying a liminal boundary to the landscape beyond'. The title, on the top of the gate, reads: 'AMENISSIMAE ALIQUOT REGIUNCULAE, A / I. VELDIO DELINEATAE, ET A NICOLAO IO: / HANNIS PISCATORE IN LUCEM AEDITAE.' 'The text/image juxtaposition may be intended as a play on the words "amoenus" (pleasant) and "estra moenia" (outside the walls) or "a/ab moenia" (from the walls), where one finds such pleasant places.' [quotations from Robert Fucci, 'Arcadia Unbound: Early Dutch landscape prints and the Amenissimae aliquot reginculae of 1616 by Jan van de Velde II', in Art in Print, vol 4, nr. 5 (2015), p. 4]. Signed at bottom: 'CJVisscher excudebat'; on the top of the door: 'Eerste Deel'. From the collection of Giuseppe Storck (1766-1836) [L.2318]: 'G. Storck a Milano 1798. / In St.o 4572.
