Charlot, Jean
The Mexican Mural Renaissance, 1920-1925
Massachusetts, Yale University Press, 1967. Hardcover. A red hardback book with the title gilted on a black square on the spine. There is a yellow dust jacket with two illustrations on the front cover. Pages: (8), vii-xv, 1-328, (40). Contains at least fifty black-and-white illustrations and photographs. This is the first book-length study of the Early Colonial manuscript painting of Mexico - a fusion of the arts of Pre-Conquest America and fifteenth-century Spain. Former studies, mainly in the hands of anthropologists and historians , have been limited by their disciplines. This book says in effect that the paintings are works of art worthy to stand beside the jades and terra cottas now so sought after by collectors. The definitions of the styles of the various Colonial schools are demonstrations of survival of Pre-Conquest schools and artistic attitudes and thus suggest directions that investigations may take into the Pre-Conquest styles of other arts. VG: A book in great condition. There is a small tear in the dust jacket at the top of the spine. There is a plate from a previous owner on the front free end page. Pencil marks in the body of the book. Solid binding.

Davey, Peter, Architecture of the Arts and Crafts Movement
Davey, Peter
Architecture of the Arts and Crafts Movement
New York, NY, Rizzoli, 1980. Hardcover. Blue paper boards with silver gilt lettering on spine, blue and pictorial dust jacket with off-white lettering, 224 pp. bw illustrations. "This book gives an account of the lives, theories and work of the architects of the movement which began in England and quickly influenced Europe and America. It highlights the contradictions they tried to resolve in accommodating or rejecting the developments of the new machine age, and in meeting the cost of materials and craftsmanship which forced them to work mainly for a wealthy elite class. It shows how the ideas of the movement influenced the California and Praire Schools and Art Nouveau and how it led to the development of neo-Georgianism and the growth of the machine worshipping Modern Movement after the Great War. We are at a stage in our own century which has interesting parallels with the period that gave birth to the Arts and Crafts movement. Many people, feeling alienated by the machine age and disenchanted with its products, are seeking inspiration from the craftsmanship of the past. At a time when scientific functionalism has been shown to fail and the society of conspicuous consumption is coming to an end the ideas and images of the Arts and Crafts Movement will be found to repay the serious study which this book gives them." - dust jacket description. VG-/G+ ( minimal age toning along textblock, all pages clear and intact - dust jacket shows light wear at corners and tiny tears at spine) .

 Lal, Kanwar, Immortal Khajuraho
Lal, Kanwar
Immortal Khajuraho
Delhi, Asia Press, 1965. Hardcover. Red cloth boards, red and black illustrated dust jacket with gold, black and white lettering, 253 pp. bw illustrations. "Immortal Khajuraho is a most vivid and masterly account of the temples and a bold and uninhibited analysis of a complexity of ideas. It portrays the search of the human soul for an immortal bliss dissolving the contraries of devotion and lust, of restraint and abandon, of art and religion. The intricacies of human thought which slumber in the sensuous rhythms and the epic magnificence of the subtle recreated with an uncanny perception and imaginative warmth. A great voyage of discovery is narrated with amazing skill and wit till the reader stands at the threshold of these temples, gazing at the soaring shikhars negotiating with both the transient and the eternal. Kanwar Lal finds in the temples of Khajuraho the highwater mark of the tradition of Hindu temple architecture, bleding a variety of styles which had flourished singly in various parts of India. This brilliant synthesis preserved in dazzling plastic art is assessed with insight, discrimmination and lucidity. As the temples of Khajuraho are a witness to the genius of Hindu artists and craftsmen, so is Immortal Khajuraho a witness to the scholarship and artistic sensibilities of Kanwar Lal." - dust jacket description.
