Each story is illustrated with multiple images, and there are an additional 5 full-page illustrations. Well connected, Joyce Ordbrown had a very successful career as an artist. The author does not attribute the stories to any particular source and they originally appeared in the children's section of the 'Cape Argus'. Joyce Ordbrown is recorded as having often visited Xhosa locations in the Eastern Cape.
