Will's Shoot Revisited (SIGNED COPY)
The Sportsman's Press, London, 2005. First Edition, Hardcover (Original Cloth). Near Fine Condition/Near Fine. 9781904057611 Inscribed by Author. grey end-papers; inscribed by the author on the pre-title page with the words:"To Graham, With best wishes for good fishing at Hauxton. Will Garfit 1/11/10". In 1970 Will Garfit, then in his final year as a postgraduate art student, borrowed £8,250 and at an auction bought sixty-nine acres (28 hectares) of abandoned gravel pits which he had loved to explore as a child. The derelict land lay between two villages near Cambridge. Over the next thirty-five years, with the help of friends and volunteers, he turned this wilderness, into one of the most celebrated small sporting estates and conservation areas in Britain. Will Garfit believes passionately that sport and conservation have always been inseparable and it is this concept that has so brilliantly been brought to fruition at Hauxton. This completely revised and updated edition of Will's Shoot, first published in 1992, is indispensable reading for anyone managing a shoot or fishery however small but it will provide inspiration and practical ideas for a far wider readership who will be carried along by the enthusiasm of the author and the sheer adventure of an astonishing project. Humphreys, John
Days and Nights on Hunter's Fen
David & Charles, Newton Abbot, Devon, 1992. Revised & Enlarged, Maroon Cloth, Illustrated by: Paley, John & Murphy, Philip. Near Fine/Near Fine. 9780715399941 "Desolate, remote, yet full of the echoes of history, the East Anglian fens are a perfect habitat for today's wildfowler, wanderer and fisherman. They have a strange and wild history, for savage Vikings, monks, Romans, adventurers, dour Dutch drainers and a creeping race of mongrel Britons have all, in their time, navigated the slow, meandering rivers. Later, the Fenman was to wrest a precarious living from eels, fish, wildfowl, reed and peat cutting; from duck decoys, coprolite mines and herding bullocks, keeping at bay as best he might the ague and clouds of poisonous mosquitoes. The underlying theme was water, the ever present risk of floods, dykes, drains, washes, learns and cuts of his half-tamed waterland. The Fenman and his hostile terrain with its strange birds and beasts are inextricably linked. This is the story of the gunners and fishermen, of wild, bloodshot sunsets, waving reeds, of old yarns, floods, otters, puntgunners, hen harriers and the author's life spent with rod, gun and flat-bottomed boat among them. Out on the lonely fen waiting under a harvest moon for the mallard, the ghosts of the skaters, wild 'slodgers', holy men and drainers, not to mention the awesome, spectral hound Black Shuck, rustle and whisper restlessly in the reeds and there are echoes of wildfowl rising from an ancient mere with the sound of distant thunder. Evocative, richly informative and beautifully illustrated by John Paley and Philip Murphy, this book will delight all those fascinated by the more remote areas of our countryside - and by tales and recollections of times past."; an enlarged edition of this classic title, now with superb specially commissioned water-colour paintings; first published in 1986, & now brought back in response to popular demand; price-intact, protected D/J.; 192 pages. Rawle. John
Cod Fishing
Beekay Publishers, Henlow Camp, Bedfordshire, 1987. First Edition, Brown Cloth. Fine/Fine. 9780947674090 gilt titles spine; profusely illustrated with b/w. drawings & colour & b/w. photo's.; "The cod is without doubt the British sea angler's favourite fish. It can be caught by a variety of methods from boat, beach, pier and rocks - in fact in any fishing situation and over twelve months of the year. The author, John Rawle, is a thirty four year old charter skipper operating his boat, Vicky Emma, from Bradwell-on-Sea in Essex. He has been a full time skipper for over thirteen years. John is also a consultant for North Western Blanks and Partridge Hooks as well as writing for the angling press on a regular basis. In addition to this, he has formed a successful partnership with Bob Cox designing and manufacturing specialist items of fishing tackle. With Bob Cox, John pioneered uptiding or boatcasting about fifteen years ago and this method has revolutionised modern-day boat angling. Cod are one of John's favourite fish and over the years he has caught and been responsible for catching thousands of cod with dozens over twenty pounds. The area he fishes does not produce many very big cod but it does produce quantities of medium sized fish and catching these consistently is the 'bread and butter' fishing of the majority of U.K. seaanglers. This book is written to help novice and experienced anglers alike. John has vast experience accumulated by fishing nearly every day and he writes authoritively on practical fishing methods; not theories but solid practical advice that if followed will lead to good, consistent catches of cod."; as-new copy in a price-intact D/J.; 165 pages. Way of the Gamekeeper
Nimrod Books Services//Learnex Ltd. Liss, Hampshire, 1985. Second Impression, Hardcover (Original Cloth). Near Fine Condition/Near Fine. 9780862300630 blue end-papers; Gamekeeping is a way of life; a career of dedication to the protection of game and the preservation of the countryside. Unhappily many of the large estate owners who were able to afford a gamekeeper are no longer able to do so and, with the ever-growing threat from the anti-country sports fraternity, there is a danger that one more tradition will fade away. An attempt has been made to make the book as practical as possible so that those interested in gamekeeping as a career can study what is involved at first hand. Throughout photographs or other illustrations have been added, thus bringing the text to life from actual gamekeeping situations. The rearing of pheasants, their management, the problems encountered and many other aspects are explained and discussed. This is a book which shows first-hand the nature of gamekeeping as it is actually practised. All details are given. and no attempt is made to hide the true nature of life in the country and the harsh reality of keeping and hunting, as well as controlling vermin. The end result is a fascinating account of the life of the gamekeeper and the training of a young man (or woman) in that career. It is part of the Field Sports Library. Shephard, Michael, Come and Fish (Sporting Scene series)
Shephard, Michael
Come and Fish (Sporting Scene series)
Museum Press, London, 1952. First Edition, Hardcover (Original Cloth). Very Good Condition/Good. Vignette in green of Angler to front cover; illustrated endpapers depicting various sports in white on grey background with series title. The sport of fishing has assumed many forms and drawn millions of people to the waterside - people of widely differing tastes, beliefs and opportunities to share in the thrill of anticipation, achievement, and that indefinable charm which is the secret quality of this all-absorbing pastime. To this almost indescribable "something", this elusive element which leads so many to spend their leisure hours beside rivers, lakes and canals, Mr. Michael Shephard gives some key through his own descriptive power and his acute enjoyment of things other than the use of line and rod - things which may be purely incidental to the sport, but which are surely an essential part of the true delight of angling. "The purpose of a fishing rod is to catch fish," he says, "but there is more to fishing than just that." And it is this other, unknown quantity which must be the common denominator throughout the entire range of the sport - a factor which can make the blankest, wettest and even the windiest of days "the greatest fun", to the bewilderment of the uninitiated. Size: Octavo (standard book size). 240 pages. Dust Jacket is fully intact, but has small chips and other signs of wear to top and bottom edges, corners etc. Dust Jacket un-clipped.
