From the 1650s such sets were used in elite European interiors as an integral part of the decorative scheme; displayed on chimney-pieces, cupboards, tables or over doors, they 'garnished' the interior and so enhanced the status of the owner. The fashion began in Europe using mismatched Chinese porcelain beakers and jars. As imports of Chinese porcelain ceased between 1657 and 1683, European potters at Nevers and Delft copied the originally exotic forms, unifying the sets with matching patterns, or with metal mounts. The fashion continued throughout the 1700s, with almost every ceramic manufactory producing examples, but came to its conclusion during the Arts and Crafts period, when the singular vase became the rage and many sets were broken up and dispersed. This book brings together some of the National Trust's most important sets of garnitures, showing them in their historic context. He examines in detail the early porcelain and stoneware produced by Böttger und Tschirnhaus, the development of a decorative style by the Horold and Löwenfinck. The great Baroque services modelled by Kändler in 1730s are the subject of a special chapter, while another discusses the figure and animal modelling for which he was equally famous. A further chapter is devoted to the snuff boxes and other small objects which the factory produced with such skill and profusion. The factory’s greatest period, from 1710 to 1760, is naturally treated in greatest depth, but the story is continued through the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, and a special section discusses the early wares decorated by outside enamellers, on Hausmaler. The colour plates mainly illustrate pieces from private collections, many of which have never been reproduced before. A fine book which will appeal not only to every lover of Meissen, but to everyone with an interest in European porcelain. By persistent observation, comparison and documentary research, Mr. Holgate has finally succeeded in establishing the shapes and decoration of genuine New Hall and the way it developed between 1781 and 1835; and he has reconstructed much of the New Hall pattern book. If we thought that, we have been proved wrong. How extraordinary, then, that at this late hour the Hockemeyers have been able not only to add to their collection, but even to improve its quality. The two simple glass dishes (nos. 55 and 56), enhanced at their centres with enamelled coats of arms, are not only beautiful in themselves but, by reason of the armorials they bear, likely to prove key documents for unravelling the nature of sixteenth century glass- production at Altare in Liguria, separated by the whole length of the Po Valley from Venice, whose island of Murano would otherwise have been given credit for them. Then again, consider the apparent improbability that the Hockemeyers' istoriato maiolica, already in 1998 represented by a number of masterpieces, would be boosted by the addition of a dish that represents the Quattro-cento origins of narrative paint ing on maiolica, as well as a fine example from a service that marks the apogee of that class of ware; yet both these things have happened. To Timothy Wilson must go most of the credit for rescuing from suspicion of spuriousness the dish here catalogued as no. 48 as well as another that had shared its provenance until Wilson himself netted it for Oxford's Ashmolean Museum. The spine is quite worn, namely on the top, however the binding is still firm. The title on the spine is faded. Edgeworn. The outside text block shows some yellowing. The interior is in very good condition, apart from a previous owner sticker glued on the front free endpaper.
