BUTTERFIELD, ARDIS [ED]
Chaucer and the City (Chaucer Studies)
Woodbridge, Suffolk, D.S.Brewer. 2006, 1st UK Edition. (ISBN: 1843840731) Hardcover. Book, [Chaucer Studies Vol XXXVII] Literature of the city and the city in literature are topics of major contemporary interest. This volume enhances our understanding of Chaucer's iconic role as a London poet, defining the modern sense of London as a city in history, steeped in its medieval past. Building on recent work by historians on medieval London, as well as modern urban theory, the essays address the centrality of the city in Chaucer's work, and of Chaucer to a literature and a language of the city. Contributors explore the spatial extent of the city, imaginatively and geographically; the diverse and sometimes violent relationships between communities, and the use of language to identify and speak for communities; the worlds of commerce, the aristocracy, law, and public order. A final section considers the longer history and memory of the medieval city beyond the devastations of the Great Fire and into the Victorian period. 231p. ibliography index. Fine.

VAN DER KISTE, JOHN
Crowns in a Changing World: British and European Monarchies 1901-36
London, Grange Books Ltd. 1996, Reprint. (ISBN: 1856279103) Hardcover. Book, At the death of Queen Victoria in 1901, almost every European nation was a monarchy, most linked by close family ties to her and Edward VII, the "uncle of Europe". Prior to the outbreak of World War I, the personal relationships of Edward, and of his successor and son, George V, flourished with the other royal families of Europe. The closeness of the European families was violently interrupted by the outbreak of war in 1914, and the armistice of 1918 brought three empires, namely Germany, Austria-Hungary and Russia, crashing down. Some monarchies were strengthened, and others weakened beyond repair. In this well-researched study, John Van der Kiste has drawn upon previously unpublished material for the Royal Archives, Windsor, to show the realtionships between the crowned heads of Europe in the first part of the 20th century. His account sheds new light on foreign policy leading up to World War I. As New/Near Fine - Slight Chip.

LESSER, IAN; LARRABEE, F. STEPHEN; ZANINI, MICHELE
Greece's New Geopolitics
Santa Monica CA, Rand / Kokkalis Foundation. 2002, 1st US Edition. (ISBN: 0833030426) Soft cover. Book, Greece has been profoundly affected by recent changes in the international environment, on its borders, and within the country itself. Many long-standing assumptions about Greek interests and Greece's role have fallen away and have been supplanted by new approaches. The country has become progressively more modern and more European, and its international policy has become more sophisticated. At the same time, the geopolitical scene has evolved in ways that present new challenges and new opportunities for Athens in its relations with Europe, the United States, and neighboring countries. Many of these challenges cross traditional regional boundaries and underscore Greece's potential to play a transregional role, lookingoutward from Europe to the Mediterranean, Eurasia, and the Middle East. This report explores the new geopolitical environment Greece faces, paying special attention to the implications for southeastern Europe and transatlantic relations; explores options for Greek strategy; and offers some new directions for policy in Greece and on both sides of the Atlantic. 113p. bibliography. New.

MCCORMICK, MICHAEL
Eternal Victory: Triumphal Rulership in Late Antiquity, Byzantium and the Early Medieval West
Cambridge, Cambridge University Press. 1990. (ISBN: 0521386594) Soft cover. Book, "As the Roman empire declined and 'fell', contemporary glorification of the emperor's triumphal rulership reached new heights, strewing traces of the empire's perennial victory across the physical and mental landscape of late antiquity. In this, the first comprehensive study of how a great imperial ceremony actually developed and how it influenced both the eastern and western heirs to the Roman legacy, the Roman triumph's resurgence and afterlife is documented from the Tetrarchy to the end of the Macedonian dynasty in Byzantium and to Charlemagne's successors in the early medieval West. This perspective shows that celebrations of the ruler's victory experienced unceasing change in ritual form and content and that these changes mirrored broader trends in the development of society and the monarchy. At the same time, it casts new light on the late Roman origins of the trappings of early medieval kingship. Far from the imperial capital, the cult of triumphal rulership permeated local elites, as commanders in the provinces imitated the supreme victor by staging triumphs of their own, and the new Germanic kings followed suit. Classicists, medievalists, Byzantinists, specialists of art and ritual will find here new data and approaches to a central problem in the transformation of the Roman Empire which culminated in the new civilization by Byzantium and the Germanic Kingdoms." 454p. bibliography.index Neat crisp copy. Fine.

SIMETI, MARY TAYLOR
Travels with a Medieval Queen - The Journey of a Sicilian Princess
London, Weidenfeld & Nicolson. 2002, 1st UK Ed. (ISBN: 0297607952) Hardcover. Book, " In 1185, the 32-year- old Constance of Sicily, a princess with the most magnificent dowry Europe has ever seen, was betrothed to the 21-year-old Henry, cold-hearted son of the great German Emperor, Frederick Barbarossa. Eight years later, the Sicilian throne lies empty and Henry and Constance (pregnant for the first time at 40) travel south to stake their claim against the usurper Tancredi's family. It is this journey that Taylor Simeti retraces, along the way contrasting medieval society with modern, capturing what the life of the medieval queen must have been like, exploring the idea of travel and pilgrimage, and expressing, above all, a deep empathy for her subject. " 319p. illus (some col.) bibliography. As New/As New.
