A landscape with the sea to the left. Two large trees in the foreground, and a coastal village in the background. Several sailing vessels on the water. Etching with plate tone on wove paper. Sheet size 287 x 224 mm., platemark 179 x 136 mm. Signed in pencil by the artist in the lower right margin. Poppe Damave (also Poppo Hermanus Damave) (Groningen 1921 - 1988 Bonn) was a Dutch painter, watercolourist, etcher and draughtsperson. He made numerous travels throughout Europe, as well as to Morocco. The image here seems to be inspired by a trip to Souther Europe. Image in excellent condition, the margins with stains in all four corners and discolouration in the top and lower edges of the margins (bleeding from glue on the verso), some surface damage in the top margin. None of these damages affect the image area.

Frontispiece to a set of 26 etchings with various landscapes. Plates were reworked over time. An old city gate at the center with two figures walking towards the opening; 'the city walls have crumbled to the point that the portal seems superfluous, merely signifying a liminal boundary to the landscape beyond'. The title, on the top of the gate, reads: 'AMENISSIMAE ALIQUOT REGIUNCULAE, A / I. VELDIO DELINEATAE, ET A NICOLAO IO: / HANNIS PISCATORE IN LUCEM AEDITAE.' 'The text/image juxtaposition may be intended as a play on the words "amoenus" (pleasant) and "estra moenia" (outside the walls) or "a/ab moenia" (from the walls), where one finds such pleasant places.' [quotations from Robert Fucci, 'Arcadia Unbound: Early Dutch landscape prints and the Amenissimae aliquot reginculae of 1616 by Jan van de Velde II', in Art in Print, vol 4, nr. 5 (2015), p. 4].
