BODINGTON, REVEREND CHARLES, Lichfield Cathedral. Illustrated by Holland Tringham
BODINGTON, REVEREND CHARLES
Lichfield Cathedral. Illustrated by Holland Tringham
London: Isbister & Co, 1899. First Edition. Original Boards. With frontispiece with protective fly-leaf & illustrations after Holland Tringham. Slight wear & slight soiling to spine, covers & corners. ; Joseph Holland Tringham (1861–1908) was a talented Victorian artist and illustrator who made significant contributions to British art and culture. Born in Hammersmith, London, he initially trained as an engineer but soon discovered his passion for art. His illustrations gained widespread recognition, appearing in esteemed publications such as The Illustrated London News and The Sketch. Tringham’s skill earned him royal patronage, with King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra sitting for portraits by him. He also exhibited his works at the Royal Academy and traveled extensively, drawing inspiration from visits to countries like India, China, and Japan. In 1891, Tringham settled in Streatham, South London, where he created six iconic sketches of the old village. These works captured the charm of Streatham and were later published as postcards, becoming beloved representations of the area’s history. Today, his legacy is honored locally, with copies of his sketches displayed in a pub named after him, The Holland Tringham, ensuring his contributions to the community are remembered. Despite his artistic achievements, Tringham faced personal challenges later in life. The rise of photographic reproduction diminished demand for illustrated work, impacting his career. Struggling with alcoholism and mental health issues, he passed away at the age of 47 in 1908 after being institutionalized following a breakdown during a trip to the Isle of Man. Though his life ended tragically, Tringham’s art continues to be celebrated for its beauty and historical significance. ; 12mo 7" - 7½" tall; 66 pages. Very Good .

HILL, CHRISTOPHER
The Collected Essays. Volume Three. People and Ideas in 17th Century England
Brighton, Sussex: The Harvester Press, 1986. First Edition Thus. ISBN: 0710805128. Dustjacket in removable plastic protective cover. With library stamps and labels. Slight wear to spine, covers, corners and dustjacket. ; "The Collected Essays of Christopher Hill Volume Three: People and Ideas in 17th Century England" gathers a comprehensive selection of essays by Christopher Hill, an eminent historian specializing in 17th-century England. Hill, known for his Marxist perspective, delves into the complex interplay of social, political, and religious forces that characterized this tumultuous period in English history. This volume, focusing on both influential individuals and prevailing ideas, sheds light on how these elements shaped the course of English history during the 17th century. Hill's essays explore a variety of topics, from the radical religious movements and the English Civil War to the intellectual revolutions and the figures who led them. He examines the impact of Puritanism, the Levellers, and other groups advocating for political and religious reforms. Through his analysis, Hill underscores the significance of ideas in mobilizing people for change and how these ideas reflected the broader socioeconomic conditions of the time. Key figures of the era, such as Oliver Cromwell, Thomas Hobbes, and John Milton, receive detailed attention, highlighting their contributions to political thought, literature, and the shaping of England's future. Hill's work is notable for its emphasis on the often-overlooked perspectives and contributions of the lower classes, arguing that their actions and beliefs played a crucial role in the era's historical developments. The essays collectively argue that the 17th century was a critical period of transformation in England, laying the groundwork for modern political and religious thought. Hill's Marxist interpretation provides a framework for understanding the period's events as part of the broader struggle between different social classes and their competing interests. "The Collected Essays of Christopher Hill Volume Three: People and Ideas in 17th Century England" is valued for its insightful analysis, depth of research, and Hill's ability to connect complex historical phenomena with the economic and social conditions of the time. It serves as an essential resource for historians, scholars, and anyone interested in the intricate dynamics of 17th-century England and the enduring impact of its people and ideas.; Octavo; xii, 340 pages. Spine, covers & corners slightly worn & slightly soiled. ; Herbert Railton (21 November 1857 – 15 March 1910) was an English artist and one of the leading black-and-white illustrators of his time. Born in Pleasington, Lancashire, he was educated in Belgium and at Ampleforth College in Yorkshire. Initially trained as an architect, Railton shifted his focus to illustration after his early drawings gained recognition. His career took off when his illustrations of a railway accident were published in the Illustrated Sporting and Dramatic News in 1881. He later moved to London, where he became renowned for his intricate and atmospheric depictions of architecture and landscapes, often characterized by broken lines and fine detail.
