Front hinge cracked. Top (1/8 inch) and bottom (1/4 inch) of spine missing. Howes S688; Sabin 84601. From the library of William R. Smith, a descendant of the author. Presentation copy from the author (founder of the University of Pennsylvania) to an Alea (?) Barclay, dated 11 January 1769. Further presented by Horace W. Smith (the author's grandson [?]) to William R. Smith, one of the founders of the Wisconsin Historical Society. A great assocation item from one of the great families in American History. The first edition of Smith"s Discourses. which includes essays on the French and Indian War (especially Braddock"s defeat), educational institutions in the colony of Pennsylvania, and various religious pieces. Smith was an Anglican clergyman, teacher, and first provost of the College, Academy, and Charitable School of Philadelphia, the precursor to the University of Pennsylvania. A second edition of this pre-Revolutionary collection of discourses was published in London in 1762. Good.
