Address to the citizens of the town and county of the town of Nottingham.
[Nottingham?]: [publisher not identified], [1825]. 21cm. 18[2]pp. including integral wraps. Assorted Masonic symbols to the upper margin of page [3]. Linen backed stiff card wrappers, title in MS. to front wrap. Text soiled and creased; small section excised from lower margin of leaf 17/18; occasional pencil underling. Ex-reference library with usual evidence. The BL entry gives precise details of the purpose of the pamphlet as follows: 'Relating to the free school at Nottingham, founded by Agnes Mellers (-1513/14) for the 'education, teaching and instruction of boys in good manners and literature' (Nottingham High School archives, charter of 1512). The address concerns a paper delivered to a parliamentary select committee appointed to inquire into the education of the poor, in which the allocation of the schools revenue (above Ł1,200 per annum) is called into question: 'the Institution is grossly abused, not only in the management of the Funds, but in the choice of Scholars'. The pamphlet records the outrage of the local school wardens, who in response released documentation detailing the school finances, revealing the annual revenue to be far lower than suggested and that all monies had been applied to the management and upkeep of the estate.' Dated at end: "Guildhall, Norwich, Sept. 30, 1825". DISCOVER: BL.
