Gumilev, N. (Gumilyov, Nikolay)
Gondla. Dramaticheskaia Poema (Gondla. A Dramatic Poem)
S. l. (Berlin), Petropolis, 1936. First edition in book form, published on the 15th anniversary of Gumilev's death (initially released in 1917 in "Russkaia mysl" journal); 5 1/4 x 4; pp. [8]; 9-86, [2]; rebound in plain, dark-blue cloth over boards; very minor age-toning and wear - in near fine condition. Set in 9th-century Iceland, where a battle between Paganism and Irish Christianity raged, the verse drama was largely autobiographical, with Nikolai Gumilev (1886 - 1921) associating himself with the main hero Gondla and presumably basing the image of Gondla's wife on that of his own - Anna Akhmatova. The play was first staged in Rostov on Don in 1920, shortly before the execution in August of 1921 of the founder of the Acmeist Movement in poetry. (Kilgour 433). Near fine .
