The Cecchetti Legacy: An Analysis and Description of the Cecchetti Method of Classical Ballet
Dance Books, Alton, 2007. First Edition, Softcover. Very Good Condition. 9781852731229 30cm x 21cm. [v], 378 pages, illustrated dance steps. Lettered wrappers. "The Cecchetti Legacy provides a more detailed account of the Cecchetti Method than has hitherto been available. Based largely on Ann Hutchinson Guest's notations from the 1950's and 60's, this is a complete record of all of the enchainements recorded in the manuals including some, which although not 'original', reflect important principles of the Method. This book will be of great use to anyone making an in-depth study of Cecchetti's enchainements as well as those interested in a more general study of their style and technique. It contains an extensive, discursive analysis of the Cecchetti style and technique using word descriptions and Labanotation examples. In addition all of the exercises and enchainements are notated fully in Labanotation, providing a detailed account including some alternative versions taught by early teachers of the work." (publisher's blurb) Minor general wear. Very minor bump to tail fore-edge corner. Quantity Available: 1. Shipped Weight: 500 grams-1 kilos. Category: Dance; ISBN/EAN: 9781852731229. Tyra de Kleen, The Temple Dances in Bali
Tyra de Kleen
The Temple Dances in Bali
Bokforlags Aktiebolaget Thule, Stockholm, 1936. First Thus, Hardcover. Very Good Condition. 31cm x 24cm. 27 pages, 77 plates (24 coloured). Original cloth, new leather labels, gilt lettering. Tyra Kleen (1874-1951) was a Swedish artist, ethnographic researcher, keen theosophist, cosmopolitan woman of the world, and a founding member of Foreningen Svenska Konstnarinnor (The Association of Swedish Women Artists). Kleen studied painting in Germany and France, lived and socialised with the cultural elite in Rome at the turn of the 19th century, and travelled, exhibited, and socialised extensively around the world. A fiercely independent character, despite rampant misogyny, she managed to skilfully manoeuvre and at times manipulate to achieve her ambitious goals. She spent many years throughout the 1910s and 1920s in Indonesia, studying ceremonial dance, and produced a number of books on dance, theatre, and ritual in Java and Bali, and in 1938 was awarded the Johan August Wahlberg for her work there. The Temple Dances in Bali includes short text on the Legong, Chalon Arong, and Joghed dances, costume, and music, with illustrations in the text, complimented by numerous captioned plates by Kleen. First published in Swedish in a limited edition of 300 copies as Tempeldanser och musikinstrument pa Bali, and here translated into English for the first time. Susan Blakeley Klein
Ankoku Buto: The Premodern and Postmodern Influence on the Dance of Utter Darkness
East Asia Program, Cornell University, Ithaca, 1988. Reprint, Softcover. New Book. 9780939657490 21.5cm x 14cm. x, 97 pages. Pictorial wrappers. "A brief introduction to the history, philosophy, and techniques of the Japanese avant-garde dance movement, Ankoku Buto. Evoking images of grotesque beauty, revelling in the seamy underside of human behavior, Buto dance groups such as Sankai Juku and Dai Rakuda-kan have performed to wide critical and popular acclaim, making Buto one of the most influential new forces in the dance world today. The monograph traces the development of Buto from its birth in the bleak post-war landscape of 1950s Japan, and then addresses the question of Buto as a post-modern phenomenon, before going on to examine the influence of traditional Japanese performance on Buto techniques. The last chapter analyzes a specific dance (Niwa - The Garden) by Muteki-sha, to show how these techniques are used concretely. Includes translations of four essays on Buto by contemporary Japanese dance critics." (publisher's blurb) Multiple copies available this title. Quantity Available: 5. Shipped Weight: Under 500 grams. 9781735766003 Vangeline, Butoh: Cradling Empty Space
Vangeline
Butoh: Cradling Empty Space
New York Butoh Institute, New York, 2020. First Edition, Softcover. New Book. 9781735766003 24cm x 17cm. xliv, 244 pages, colour photographs. Pictorial wrappers. "Approaching the avant-garde Japanese performance art form of butoh from a cross-cultural, gender studies, and scientific perspective, award-winning artist and teacher Vangeline brings a fresh look at this postmodern dance form. Butoh, a performance art form that grew out of the Japanese avant-garde scene of the 1950s, has traveled from east to west over the last 60 years, growing in popularity as it evolves. With origins in modern dance, French mime, and the surrealist movement, this fascinating postmodern dance genre is often thought of as mysterious and is frequently misunderstood. Through twenty years of research, interviews with some of the world's top practitioners, historical documents, and rare photographs, Vangeline shines a light on this "dance of darkness." New revelations include the under-represented role of women in the development of the form, the connection between butoh and neuroscience, and the cross-cultural perspective of international influences on the evolution of the dance. Butoh: Cradling Empty Space will appeal to dance students, teachers, performance art scholars, movers, and anyone interested in choreography, theater, and Japanese history, culture and art. The book includes rare photographs, helpful graphics, a detailed bibliography and footnotes, and resources for additional information." (publisher's blurb) Quantity Available: 1.
