The authors argue that traditional film semiology—particularly the influential theories of Christian Metz—was insufficient for analysing Robbe-Grillet’s experimental narratives, which disrupt conventional storytelling, visual continuity, and sound-image relationships. Chateau and Jost propose a “new semiology” tailored to the “new cinema” of the 1960s and 1970s. Rather than treating the filmic “shot” as the minimal unit of meaning, they advocate for a parametric analysis that considers how various audiovisual elements—such as motifs, sound patterns, and visual structures—interact across a film’s duration. This approach emphasises the interplay between image and sound, the recurrence of thematic motifs, and the presence of “tele-structures” (long-range structural patterns) that shape the viewer’s experience. The book focuses on Robbe-Grillet’s films—including L’Immortelle, L’Homme qui ment, and L’Éden et après—to demonstrate how these works challenge classical cinematic codes. By doing so, the authors call for a rethinking of semiotic frameworks to accommodate the complexities of modernist and postmodernist cinema. This work remains a foundational text in film theory, particularly for those interested in narrative experimentation, the relationship between sound and image, and the evolution of cinematic language..
