LAWRENCE (John):
A General Treatise on Cattle, The Ox, The Sheep, and the Swine: comprehending their Breeding, Management, Improvement and Diseases. Dedication to The Right Hon. Lord Somerville.
London: Printed for H. D. Symonds..., 1805. FIRST EDITION. Large 8vo, 203 x 123 mms., pp. [viii], 639 [540 blank, 541 - 646 Index and Errata] , contemporary sheepskin, black leather label; front joint weak, rear joint a little rubbed, corners worn. John Lawrence (1753–1839) made his reputation mainly from his concern for the welfare of animals; he claimed to have written a pamphlet when he was 15 on "animal rights," but most of his publications appeared when he was in his forties. In 1796 Lawrence published the first volume of what has become his most significant work, A Philosophical and Practical Treatise on Horses and the Moral Duties of Man towards Brute Creation (the second volume was published in 1798), and in the third part of this work. "Of the rights of beasts," he enunciated concerns that had a comsiderable impact on animal welfare in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. In the present book, his interest in cattle, bison, ox, etc. is more for their use as "beasts of burden," than as food The only copy that OCLC lists of this 1805 edition is in the National Library of Sweden.
