Very good. - A superb 28 inch wide by 37 inch wide commercial folding wall map of British Columbia produced under the supervision of G.G. Aitken, Chief Geographer of the Land Recording Divisions. Produced during British Columbia's period of economic growth following the First World War, the map exhaustively details telegraph, phone, and railroad lines with an index of post offices and a table of distances. The map, with color outlines, offers details of cities, towns, and villages within the province with a table of distances by ship, rail and road to destinations within Canada and across the world printed along the left. There is a tiny hole in the fold at the center of the map with very slight loss. Very good. A previous owner has noted on the verso of the map: "Plan showing from Pine Pass to Pa[..] Terminal". In the left corner of the map in red pencil the owner has sketched an outline of a "Steam Ship Channel" with the note "First X is Town Site the second X is Iron deposit also [?]. Very good .

Ottawa: Department of the Interior, Canada / Natural Resources Intelligence Service, 1927. 1927. - A 26 inch high by 27-3/4 inch wide color folding map of Alberta's Peace River Grande Prairie Land District depicting lands open for settlement, forest preserves as well as proposed forest preserves and main roads. The legend, printed in red under the title at left, proclaims that "Certain areas included in this map have been covered by land classification and soil surveys.. All unoccupied surveyed agricultural lands, whether odd-numbered or even-numbered sections, that are not reserved or that have not been disposed of are open to entry for Homestead." Additionally listed are responsibilities of residents with tips on preserving arable land from forest fires. The edges are slightly creased and chipped with a couple of short tears and with very tiny holes at the intersection of some of the folds. Very good. Very good .

The covers are rubbed and stained. Pages [1]-24, [52-53], [1 leaf], [56-57], 1-49 & [1-5], as per the table of contents. The contents consist of the original title page which has been laid down on a larger sheet, a table of contents, the "Historical Sketch of the County of Haldimand" [pages 5 through 19], a "Business Directory of Haldimand County" [pages 20 through 24], a double-page color map of "Quebec and Lower Provinces" [paginated as 52-53 in the table of contents], a double-page color map of the "United States" [paginated as 56-57 in the table of contents], followed by profuse engraved maps & plates, with illustrations of local business cards on the last 4 pages. There is some foxing & soiling throughout with a few tiny marginal tears. A larger tear to the table of contents has been repaired with archival linen tape on the verso. The full-page plate of the "American Hotel, Jarvis" [page 15] has been repaired with linen tape along the lower inch of the image. The "Map of Ontario" on page 23 has been repaired with linen tape affecting some of the lower part of the image with corresponding repairs to the "Map of the Township of North Cayuga" on the verso [page 24]. There are several other small repairs to the edges of a few pages which does not affect the images. A complete RARE Canadian Atlas.

[1920's]. - An original 40-1/2 inch high by 37 inch wide map of the East Cariboo Block of British Columbia printed in white on blueprint stock. The large map is unevenly folded down to measure 10-3/4 inches high by 6-1/2 inches wide. The historic "Gang Ranch", one of the largest in Canada, is represented at bottom left of the map in the southwest section with "Dog Creek" north of the ranch. "150 Mile House" is also indicated. "Barkerville", once the main town of the Cariboo Gold Rush is located at the Northern edge at the center top of the map. The map includes such lakes as "Mahood Lake", "McIntosh Lake", "Murphy (Eagle) Lake", "Spout Lake", "Hobson Lake", "Clearwater Lake", "Cariboo Lake", "Quesnel Lake", "Horsefly Lake", etc. A trail, with annotations, is penned in red crayon or grease pen. The trail, which is traced out in red, runs from just south of Boss Lake, passes by Hobson Lake to the east and then north of Ghost Lake. It then rounds Quesnel Lake east of a long telephone line. Annotations in red along the eastern portion of this trail indicate "Snow Mts", "High" and "Low Pass". Additional annotations penned in black identify 4 sets of waterfalls, indicted as "Falls", along the Horsefly River. "3200" degrees is penned at right of the last waterfall. There are several pictorial markings penned along the left section of the Horsefly River. At least 2 areas are identified by the word "burn". We could not read a few other annotations penned in black ink on the dark blue paper north of the river. There is a small tear to the bottom edge of the map near the lower right corner and a couple of tiny chips to the top edge of the map. Very good.

RARE. WorldCat locates a map at the Simon Fraser University Library which is quite possibly the same map. There are no indications of the place or date of publication present on the map but the University attributes its publication to the B.C. Department of Lands, Victoria and dates it as 1929. An additional note in the library's listing indicates that "this is the block referred to in schedule A of the "P.G.E. Railway Aid Act 1925". Very good .

The covers are lightly soiled with faint creases and a small rust stain near the top of the front cover. 60 pages, with 4 folding charts, including 2 in color. The edges of the pages are lightly darkened with minor creases to several page corners and a few tiny tears to the edges. Very good.

RARE.

The teacher, physician and politician John Duncan MacLean (1873-1948) served as the 20th premier of the Canadian province of British Columbia. MacLean was a doctor in Greenwood when he was elected as a Liberal to the provincial legislature in 1916. Appointed minister of education and provincial secretary, serving in the cabinets of Harlan Carey Brewster and John Oliver, he then went on to become minister of finance in 1924. He became B.C.'s premier after Oliver's death in 1927, but unable to reverse the Liberal government's decline, he lost to the Conservatives in 1928. He served his remaining years as chairman of the Canadian Farm Loan Board. Very good .

Very good. - A large 35 inch high by 39-1/2 inch wide partially colored folding map of Northern Alberta from a little South of Athabasca through the Caribou Mountains and up beyond Fort Smith near the top. Predominently black and white with bodies of water colored in green & points of interest in sienna, the whole within a sienna ruled frame. The map, compiled and engraved at the Chief Geographer's Office, is produced on a scale of 1:792,000 or 12-1/2 miles to 1 inch. The area at left of the sienna ruled border is identified as the "Peace River Block / 3,500,000 acres conveyed by the Province of British Columbia to the Dominion Government". Occasional grids identify areas of settlements and likely also Indian populations. A line, drawn by hand in purple, which often follows the rivers and other bodies of water, may likely represent an existing or proposed railway line which meanders from South to North with a bifurcation heading West towards the Peace River Block and British Columbia. A portion of this Westward line is represented by purple colored broken lines which might imply that the solid lines represent completed sections of the railway whereas the broken line section is still projected. There are a couple of tiny tears and holes where some of the folds intersect. Very good. A copy of this map is located in the "Claims Research and Assessment Directorate Indian and Northern Affairs Canada". Very good .

Softcover, printed stapled self-wraps, illustrated with a map and a lengthy title on the cover page. There is minor soiling to the cover pages and a couple of tiny chips to that of the front cover. This unusual brochure consists of 16 large folded pages each measuring 7 inch high by 21-1/2 inch wide each extolling the virtues of the province and listing relevant statistics such as the "Climate of British Columbia", a "Comparative Geographical Study", "Manufacturing Siting", "Education in British Columbia", "Stock-Raising and Grazing", "Land!, Choice Land! Lands Especially Selected to Insure Successful Farming", "Our Forest Heritage", "Water-Power in British Columbia", "The Big Game in British Columbia" (with itineraries for hunting grizzly and black bears), "Mining in British Columbia", and so on, all illustrated with charts and diagrams. There is some occasional light soiling, else very good.

The lengthy subtitle proclaims: "California, Oregon & Washington with a total area of 317,612 square miles, situated to the west of the Rocky Mountains and paralleling the Pacific Ocean, form the western seaboard lands of the United States of America. Immediately north of these three States lies British Columbia with an area of 372,630 square miles also paralleling the Pacific Ocean and forming the western seaboard of the Dominion of Canada. From the United States - a few hours, or from the British Isles - six days of comfortable conditions of present day ocean traveling, and you arrive in CANADA. -- Your Country of Great Future. Although no date is listed, John Oliver, British Columbia's premier moved to B.C. from Ontario in 1877. In his introductory essay, he informs us that "British Columbia has been my home since I came as a boy to seek my fortune fifty years ago", thus dating this work as having been published some time circa 1927.

Born in Ontario, the Canadian politician John Oliver (1856-1927) moved to British Columbia with his family in 1877 and took up a farm in the Delta. Involved in local politics, he was elected to the province's legislature in 1900, becoming leader of the opposition. Although he lost his seat in 1909, he was re-elected in 1916 when the Liberal party enjoyed an overwhelming win. Oliver was first appointed minister of agriculture and railway and following Harlan Brewster's death in 1918, Oliver followed him as B.C.'s 19th premier. Not an innovative politician, Oliver was nonetheless regarded as a plain spoken man of considerable integrity and often referred to as "Honest John". He governed the province through the difficult times following the first world war and the subsequent stagnation experienced in the 1920's. Oliver was instrumental in efforts to develop fruit cultivation in the Okanagan Valley, in order to help the struggling Pacific Great Eastern Railway and to secure freight-rate concessions from the federal government. The village of Oliver, B.C. and Mount John Oliver are named in his honor. Very good .

Softcover, a rare four-page promotional pamphlet printed on newsprint with a banner title and text printed in 2 columns on the cover page and with a central column of text printed between 2 columns of advertisements on the next 3 pages. There is a vertical black stain with oxidation from a metal clip across the upper half of the front page. Folded once horizontally with a couple of very tiny tears to the front edges. Good.

A rare promotional pamphlet outlining Quesnel's selling points, including its "Location and Environment", "Commercial" spaces, its "Soil", its "Produce", "Climate", "Lands Available for Settlement", "Fish and Game", "Cariboo Minerals", its "Timber", and "Financial and Labor Conditions". Good .
