A very good full leather binding with gilt label to front board. 4to. 12.50" x 10.25" x 1.75". Unpaginated. Polished black morocco over thick boards. Corners bumped. Front board with dulled gilt label: "The United Parishes Of S. Margaret Lothbury, S. Christopher Le Stocks, S. Bartholomew By The Exchange." Spine with 5 raised bands and dulled gilt title: "Common Prayer". All page edges gilt (now a little dulled), Original yellow endpapers soiled. Light spotting to free-endpapers. Title-page in red & black. Clear English text throughout in double columns. Each page within a red-lined border. Pages refering to Morning and Evening Prayer soiled due to previous regular use. With 4 black silk marker ribbons. A very good 19th century parayer book with an interesting provenance. ** "St Christopher le Stocks was a parish church on the south side of Threadneedle Street in the Broad Street Ward of the City of London. Of Medieval origin, it was rebuilt following the Great Fire of London in 1666, but demolished to make way for an extension of the neighbouring Bank of England. The parish was united with that of St Margaret Lothbury in 1781, and the church pulled down the next year. In 1839 Saint Bartholomew by the Exchange was added when its church was also demolished. ".

A very good early quarter calf binding. 8vo. 7.5" x 5.0" x 1.25". Dark brown morocco spine with gilt titles, over marbled boards. Corners rounded. Plain endpapers. Loosely inserted type-written note dated Jan 26, 1942 relating to the previous owner, on headed paper (25, Park Town, Oxford.) signed by Bryce McMaster. Decorated title in red & black. Verso with a portrait of Queen Elizabeth at prayer. Every page with decorated border illustrated with designs after Albert Durer, Hans Holbein, and others. Bound in black goatskin over bevelled boards, the covers with raised compartments, tooled in blind, with central cross. Spine with four raised bands, blind stamped decorated compartments and gilt title: "Common Prayer". Inner gilt dentelles, with yellow endpapers. All page edges gilt (rubbed). Light soiling to free-endpapers. Separate title-page: "A New Version of the Psalms of David by N Tate and N Brady.." un-dated . Clear text throughout on lightly toned paper. Oxford: Printed At The University Press by Samuel Collingwood And Co, sold by E. Gardener et al, M.DCCC.XL. [1840 ] . 0. A very good velvet binding with brass edging and central brass clasp. Small 8vo. 5.75" x 3.5" x 1.25". Navy blue velvet covered boards, with small central brass plaque to front board: "Church Services". Light wear to hinges and top & tail of spine. Smooth spine. Brass edging with pierced corner decoration and one central clasp in working order. Name engraved to clasp: "C. M. St. John". All page edges bright gilt. Velvet inlay to the inside of each board. Ivory watered silk endpapers. Previous owners inscription to front free-endpaper dated 1842: "Catherine Maria St. John from her affectionate Husband John Beauchamp Sept. 19 1842". Clean throughout. A lovely example of Victorian bookbinding. ** Catharine Maria Steward was born on 17 February 1810 in Warwickshire, her father, Samuel, was 34, and her mother, Catherine, was 35. She married John Beauchamp St John on 19 September 1842. They had two children during their marriage. She died on 17 September 1847 in Buildwas, Shropshire, at the age of 37, and was buried there.

Brown morocco binding. Front board with gilt titles: "Consecutive Common Prayer."; and gilt crest: "C. T." [Tyalor Family]; and motto: "Plus Ultr" ( A shortened form of "Ne Plus Ultra" ). each board with brass edging and central brass clasp. All page edges bright gilt. Original pale yellow endpapers. Neat dedication to front free-endpaper: "Caroline Taylor Sept. 1863, from her affectionate husband A.S.T." The text is re-arranged, and the rubrics and Occasional Offices are omitted; "..so as to avoid the inconvenience of turning repeatedly from one part of the Book to another..". Clean text throughout. A very good copy of a scarce printing.

Rear board rubbed. Hinges and corners carefully strengthened. Inner gilt dentelles. Faded marbled endpapers. Previous owner's signature to front endpaper: "Eliz. Marriott Septr. 15, 1794". Clear English text throughout on lightly toned and spotted paper. Bound with: "The companion to the altar.." (no title-page); bound with A New Version Of The Psalms (title-page un-dated). * Referenced by: ESTC T182717 . *** Family history records show that: "Elizabeth Featherstonehaugh was born in 1748 in Bishopsgate, Middlesex, her father, Richard, was 28, and her mother, Elizabeth, was 23. She married William Marriott on 4 June 1776 in Surrey. They had four children during their marriage. She died on 4 August 1815 at the age of 67, and was buried in London.. William Marriott, Esq, of Hoxton Square, who was born December 16th, 1753, and died July 15th, 1815, in the 63rd year of his age. He was one of the executors of the late Rev. John Wesley, and for many years a distinguished member of the Methodist Church.

VG. ** " Lady Emily Hay, Lady Peel (1836 – 23 April 1924) was the daughter of George Hay, 8th Marquess of Tweeddale and of Lady Susan Montagu (18 September 1797 – 5 March 1870). One of ten siblings, she was born in Yester, East Lothian, Scotland and baptised there on 28 February 1837. On 13 January 1856, she married Sir Robert Peel, 3rd Baronet, the eldest son of prime minister Sir Robert Peel, 2nd Baronet. Their twin daughters Gwendolin Cecilia and Agnes Helen (1860–1964) were born in 1860, followed by Victoria Alexandrina Julia (1865–1935), Robert (1867–1925) and Evelyn Emily (1869–1960). On 9 May 1895, aged 73, her husband was found dead, from haemorrhage on the brain, in his bedroom at 12 Stratton Street, London. He was buried at Drayton-Bassett parish church on 16 May. Their only son Robert succeeded in the baronetcy. Lady Peel was interested in dog racing and bred several award-winning borzoi. French Rosarian François Lacharme named a rose cultivar after her. Lady Peel died aged 88 on 4 April 1924 in Florence, Tuscany, Italy." - See Wikipedia *** "Laurence Peel (28 June 1801 – 10 December 1888) was a British Tory politician. Peel was the sixth son of Sir Robert Peel, 1st Baronet and Ellen Yates. He was educated at Rugby School and Christ Church, Oxford. In 1827 he was elected to the House of Commons as the Member of Parliament for Cockermouth. He held the seat until 1830. His eldest brother, Robert Peel, became Prime Minister in 1841. He married Lady Jane Lennox, daughter of Charles Lennox, 4th Duke of Richmond on 20 July 1822. After leaving Parliament he and his wife devoted themselves to the promotion of charitable and religious causes. His eldest son was Sir Charles Lennox Peel." - See Wikipedia.

A very good original maroon cloth binding. Gilt title to front board and spine. Rubbing to edges and corners. Spined sunned. Top page edge gilt, other page edges deckled (rough-cut). Old library label to verso of the front board: "Bournemouth Natural Science Society." Neat inscription to front endpaper: "To Jos. Le Paira. With all good wishes of the writer a friend of more than half a century, Edw. Quaile. Feb 1898". Foxing to endpapers, otherwise clean text a nd illustrations throughout. VG. ** Edward Quaile (7th May 1821 - 29th August 1900 ) . The Quaile family moved from Dumfries, Scotland to Liverpool around the 1830s, where Edward was apprenticed to a cotton broker. By 1870, he was President of the Cotton Broker’s Association, and living in Birkenhead. He built up an enviable collection of illuminated manuscripts and other antiquities. Amongst Quaile’s collection of antiquities was one artifact of singular significance to Burns Night: the last razor that Robert Burns, the bard himself, ever shaved with." - See Flaybrick Memorial Gardens Project .
