An Early Massachusetts Bank Check
S. l. (Boston), Massachusetts Bank, 1805. Printed check on laid paper, partially filled in manuscript; 2 x 6; decorated with an ornate, woodcut border; unevenly trimmed, affecting the edge of the wood-engraved border; in very good condition. The Massachusetts Bank was founded in 1784 - the first federally-chartered, joint-stock owned bank in the United States and the second bank to receive a charter, after the Bank of North America. It would also be the only bank in Boston, until 1792, and its early account holders included Paul Revere, John Hancock (who signed the charter), and Samuel Adams. The current check was made out to: "No. 71, or Bearer, for one hundred and fifty dollars, on account of Silas Clark. Very good .
