Iperide Alverno, M. 9: Un&Apos;Aeronave Italiana Durante la Grande Guerra
Iperide Alverno
M. 9: Un&Apos;Aeronave Italiana Durante la Grande Guerra
Milano, S. A. Fratelli Treves, 1936. Leather. A scarce Italian work examining the use of airships and Zeppelins during the First World War. With several black and white photographic plates. Original paper wraps bound in. The Macchi M.9 was a flying boat bomber produced in Italy close to the end of World War I, and shortly afterwards. It was a conventional design for its day, with unstaggered biplane wings of unequal span and a single engine mounted pusher-fashion on struts in the interplane gap, close to the underside of the top wing. The pilot and observer sat side-by-side in an open cockpit. While earlier Macchi flying boats had conventional interplane struts, the M.9 introduced the Warren truss-style struts that would become characteristic of this manufacturer's designs. Around 16 examples were delivered to the Italian Navy prior to the Armistice, and around another 14 were assembled after the end of hostilities. A small number of postwar aircraft were built with four seats under the designation M.9bis and were used in Switzerland for carrying passengers and mail. In the original Italian. In a half calf binding with marbled boards. Externally excellent, very little shelfwear. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally bright and clean aside from marginal age-toning and the odd spot. Plates remain very bright and clean. Page 225-6 is bound in to the end rather than where it should be. Ink signature of Douglass Whetton and Valerie to title, ink stamp of Douglas Whetton to original paper front wrap. Very Good Indeed . Ill.: None. Very Good Indeed .

After the war the company focused on helicopters, and was merged with several other British firms to create Westland Helicopters in 1961. In a paper-binding. Royal Air Force the Aircraft in Service Since 1918
London, Hamlyn, 1981. Cloth. A fascinating history of the Royal Air Force, copiously illustrated throughout by the notable British illustrator Michael Turner. Michael Turner specialises in motoring and aviation paintings and his work is often regarded as some of the earliest and best examples on such subjects. His interest in aviation and aeroplanes of the Royal Air Force began when he was a child during the Second World War, and became a predominant focus of Turner's work, as seen within this text. This volume features over one hundred examples of his work, covering the entire history of the service. This text was written by Chaz Bowyer, a Royal Air Force armaments and explosives instructor who, after he retired from service, wrote and edited over forty books relating to the operations, aircraft, and men of the Royal Flying Corps, Royal Air Force, and Royal Naval Air Service. Peter G. Masefield [ed]
The Aeroplane Spotter Volume I and III
London, Temple Press Limited, 1941-2. Cloth. Two volumes of this popular wartime aviation magazine edited by Peter G. Masefield, intended to aid civilians in recognising aircrafts. Two volumes. Volumes I and III which include the complete series of issues from January to June 1941 and January to December 1942. Illustrated throughout with monochrome diagrams, photographs and illustrations of aircrafts, both friend and foe. This magazine was edited by Peter G. Masefield and was published weekly until late 1941 when the magazine switched to a fortnightly format due to newsprint shortages. Launched with official support just after the end of the London Blitz, this magazine quickly became the focus for all the aircraft enthusiasts in the UK. Its official function was to help improve the standard of aircraft recognition among civilian air defence volunteers, but it effectively popularised the hobby of "spotting". After the demise of the magazine in 1948, many "spotters" set up their own organisations to carry on their interest. In the publisher's original quarter cloth with paper to the boards.
