A simple device for the recognition of the brightest stars and constellations seen from latitude 51.5 N.A useful moveable guide to reading the stars, an invaluable aid for stargazers. The first planisphere is thought to have been made in 1624 by German astronomer Jacob Bartsch.  The days of the year are marked on the outer portion of the star chart, and hours of the day and night along the edge of the overlay. The stars visible at a particular date and time can be seen through the elliptical aperture in the overlay, by aligning the disk and the overlay accordingly.To the rear of the planisphere are instructions for its use in English, French, German and Danish.Constructed out of two rotating volvelles.In exceptional condition. In the original Dutch.A very scarce planisphere, a moveable guide to reading the stars, and an invaluable aid for stargazers. The first planisphere is thought to have been made in 1624, by German astronomer Jacob Bartsch. The days and months of the year are marked on the outer portion of the work, with the constellations visible at a particular date and time visible through the elliptical plastic aperture in the overlay.Moving portions are in full working order.A small hole to the head of the work appears to indicate that this planisphere was intended to be used as a decorative wall hanging. In the publisher's original binding, with two paper covered boards connected by a metal stud and thus revolving, and with a plastic aperture to the front board. Spotting to front board, which is lightly age toned. Small 1" closed tear to the plastic. Moving parts in full working order. Light handling marks to head and tail of rear board. Very Good Indeed . The second edition of the work, with the work having been first published in 1890.Magnificently illustrated with twenty monochrome plates including a monochrome folding photographic chart of the Pleiades by MM. Paul and Prosper Henry containing 2326 Stars as the frontispiece, in addition to thirty-eight monochrome vignettes. Collated complete. This work was one of the first publications to be illustrated with astrophotography, and contains five astronomical photographs of nebulae.This copy with a bookplate that reads; "O libri, soli liberales et liberi, commodissimi magistri, qui omni petenti tribuitis, qui omnes manumittitis vobis sedulo servientes, Vos Arca Noe!
