Holt, Tonie & Valmai
Picture Postcards of the Golden Age, A Collector's Guide
MacGibbon & Kee, London, 1971. First Edition, Hardcover (Original Cloth). Very Good Condition/Good. 9780261632455 purple end-papers; A classic work on postcard collecting. Very well illustrated by 32 pages of half-tone pictures & eight pages in colour. The authors' primary concern is to give practical advice to the collector: where to find cards and how to go about starting a collection, how to restore and classify, how to value and date. All the major types of postcard are covered-topographical, commemorative, First World War, portrait, political. humorous, heraldic, silk embroidered and others. Many little-known facts are given about the development of the official postal stationery card which preceded the picture postcard itself, and about individual picture postcard artists and publishers. The appendix includes a chronology of historical events featured on postcards, lists of publishers and their trademarks, a chart of the main issues of 'officials', lists of today's postcard magazines and dealers, and the authors' own special key to valuing, which is proof against price inflation. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. 214 pages. Binding is tight, covers and spine fully intact. Dust Jacket is in very good condition, except for a mark from adhesive tape on bottom corner of inner front flap. Dust Jacket un-clipped. Gilt titles spine. brown cloth. 1870673336 Morris, Alistair, Antiques from the Garden
Morris, Alistair
Antiques from the Garden
Garden Art Press/Antique Collectors Club Ltd. Woodbridge, Suffolk, 1999. Second Edition, Hardcover (Original Cloth). Fine Condition/Fine. 9781870673334 Pictorial end-papers; Title pages; list of manufacturers, designers & suppliers; & introduction to front. The author of this text sets out to demonstrate that a form of art is frequently to be encountered in terms of the design, innovation and imagination embodied within these garden items. As a collecting area it is in its infancy but contains all the ingredients a potential collector would choose. There is history, geography, economics, workmanship and engineering. There are makers' marks and trademarks, common, scarce and rare varieties. There are collecting areas within areas and satisfying, attractive objects of varying sizes in various materials. From asparagus forks to water barrows and bark peeling spades to thistle tongs, this book includes details and illustrations to make the reader aware of a lesser known aspect of gardening history. The comprehensive coverage includes not only decorative garden antiques - pergolas and furniture, fountains and jardinieres, but also more down-to-earth items without which a garden cannot be made - tools and watering systems, mowing machines and wheelbarrows. Sections on garden games and garden ephemera are also included. The strong illustrative content, much of it contemporary source material, highlights our rich gardening past and in so doing makes the book an invaluable research tool for students of garden and art history, as well as for collectors of 'gardenalia'. Size: 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. 279 pages. Binding is tight, covers and spine fully intact. Dust Jacket un-clipped. Gilt titles spine & front. Oman, C. C., English Domestic Silver
Oman, C. C.
English Domestic Silver
A & C Black, London, 1934. First Edition, Hardcover (Original Cloth). Near Fine Condition/Very Good. In this book the history of the craft of workers in precious metals is briefly surveyed in its successive phases, especially the work of the silversmith in Anglo-Saxon times, in the Middle Ages, and from the Renaissance to the Restoration. The modern period is dealt with in more detail, beginning with the great demand for plate to replace that which was lost in the Civil War. Form and decoration are discussed, and the varieties of silver pieces made for the dinner-service, and the service of wine and beer, of tea, chocolate and coffee. Particular attention is given, in both text and illustrations, to several subjects hitherto neglected, notably the art of heraldic engraving on plate. Well over one hundred carefully selected pieces are illustrated, the majority being subsequent to 1660, of the period most accessible to the collector to-day. Size: Octavo (standard book size). 232 pages. Binding is tight, covers and spine fully intact.
