A Bicetre, [Paris], 1788. Hardcover. Near Fine Condition. 17cm x 10cm. 87 pages, 2 plates. Half leather, marbled papered boards, gilt lettering and decoration, all edges gilt, marbled endpapers. Text is in French. Mademoiselle Javotte, a work of little morality, written by herself, and published by one of her friends. An anonymous tale (often attributed to Paul Baret / Paul Barrett) in which the heroine engages in sex work to escape poverty. A racy reworking of a closely titled 1757 moral work, whereas this one has little. This copy illustrated with 2 erotic etchings. Minor rubbing to leather. Shipped Weight: .15 kilos.

Full leather, gilt lettering and decoration. 4 photographs mounted in a full leather presentation album showing a silver challenge shield and silver plate table piece of a model of Captain Cook's ship, the Endeavour, which was gifted from The People of Australia to HMS Commonwealth, a King Edward VII-class battleship of the British Royal Navy at a naval review in 1911. The album contains the bookplate of lawyer, politician, and Federalist, Sir Josiah Henry Symon (1846-1934). Symon represented the Commonwealth Government at the review and made the presentation of the shield and table piece. Photographs by the S. A. Govt. Photolithographic Dept, A. Vaughan, Govt. Photolithographer. From the collection of J. B. Hawkins. Minor marks and rubbing to leather. Tissue guards removed. Minor soil to first photograph. Minor surface wear to photographs.. A history of the Westminster School in London, though also a recording of its past customs and a lengthy biographical recording of headmasters and numerous distinguished students, and personal reminiscences. Frederic H. Forshall was a Queen's Scholar at Westminster and won a scholarship to Trinity College, Cambridge, but left after a year, moving to Sydney. He was part of the first cohort at The University of Sydney in 1852, and while still a student was appointed the University Librarian. In 1853 he was the first prizewinner for Greek verse composition which are printed here (pp. 358-360). Plates illustrating various interiors, Westminster beating Eton at rowing in 1845, and others. Ex-Cambridge Union Society, labels removed, some stamps. Rebacked. Moderate general wear. The first folding plate repaired on verso. Second folding plate with 3cm closed tear to fore-edge. Rebacked quarter brown leather, papered boards, gilt lettering. The first edition of this practical land surveying handbook intended to be of use to architects, engineers, carpenters, bricklayers, and other craftsmen by English surveyor Vincent Wing (1619-1668). "..probably the first work on surveying to be written for use as a handbook" (Richeson, English Land Measuring to 1800, pg. 122) Provides a comprehensive manual of the principles and practice of land and quantity surveying, using some of Vincent Wing's own commissions as case studies. "Surveyed and laid out in a more Accurate, Plain and Expeditious Plat, then hath hitherto been performed." WING W2991. This copy with various owner names of the Chorley family, one Alexander Chorley dated 1773, also John and Sarah, as well as James McDonald, and with their marginalia throughout. Rebacked without the final blank leaf (Y4). Boards rubbed and worn. Minor foxing and soiling. Short, some partial cropping of headlines and catchwords, loss to the last line of page 108 (verso of H6), and the extremities of a few of the tables: fore-edge of page 163, tail of pp. 311, 316-320, and to some of the marginalia. Folding plate worn at fore-edge and with a small closed tear to the fold repaired with paper tape on verso. A few minor (<2cm) closed tears to edges: fore-edge of A3, tail of C4 and C5. 2.5cm open tear to top corner of P8 with some loss text of page 223. Shipped Weight: .27 kilos.
