Publisher's full brown cloth, gilt lettering on spine, gilt medallion on cover, t.e.g. Profusely illustrated with Color and B&W maps, photographs and reproductions. These are the experiences of American sailor, minister and professor John Smith Sewall (1830-1911) aboard the warship U.S.Saratoga, later one of the "Black Ships" of Commodore Matthew Perry's Squadron sent to Japan (1853-1854). As a captain's clerk aboard the Saratoga from 1850-1854, Sewall logged the ship's daily activities.
