Gavin Menzies 38158
1421. The Year China Discovered America
Harper Perennial, 2002. Paperback. Pp: 650. On March 8, 1421, the largest fleet the world had ever seen set sail from China to proceed all the way to the ends of the earth to collect tribute from the barbarians beyond the seas. When the fleet returned home in October 1423, the emperor had fallen, leaving China in political and economic chaos. The great ships were left to rot at their moorings and the records of their journeys were destroyed. Lost in the long, self-imposed isolation that followed was the knowledge that Chinese ships had reached America seventy years before Columbus and had circumnavigated the globe a century before Magellan. And they colonized America before the Europeans, transplanting the principal economic crops that have since fed and clothed the world. ISBN: 9780061564895. Cond./Kwaliteit: Redelijk.

Barry Schwartz 74205
Abraham Lincoln in the Post-Heroic Era - History and Memory in Late Twentieth - Century America. History and Memory in Late Twentieth-Century America
University of Chicago Press, 2009. Linnen band met stofomslag. Pp: 384. By the 1920s, Abraham Lincoln had transcended the lingering controversies of the Civil War to become a secular saint, honored in the North and South alike. Throughout the Great Depression and World War II, Lincoln was invoked as a reminder of America's strength and wisdom, a commanding ideal against which weary citizens could see their own hardships in perspective. But as Barry Schwartz reveals in Abraham Lincoln in the Post-Heroic Era , those years represent the apogee of Lincoln's prestige. The decades following World War II brought radical changes to American culture, changes that led to the diminishing of all heroes - Lincoln not least among them. As Schwartz explains, growing sympathy for the plight of racial minorities, disenchantment with the American state, and an intensifying celebration of diversity all contributed to a culture in which neither Lincoln nor any single person could be a heroic symbol for all Americans. Paradoxically, however, the very culture that made Lincoln an object of indifference, questioning, criticism, and even ridicule was a culture of unprecedented beneficence and inclusion, where racial, ethnic, and religious groups treated one another more fairly and justly than ever before. Thus, as the prestige of the Great Emancipator shrank, his legacy of equality continued to flourish.Schwartz documents the decline of Lincoln's public standing, asking throughout whether there is any path back from this post-heroic era. Can a new generation of Americans embrace again their epic past, including great leaders whom they know to be flawed? As the 2009 Lincoln Bicentennial approaches, readers will discover here a stirring reminder that Lincoln, as a man, still has much to say to us - about our past, our present, and our possible futures. Acts Passed at the First Session of the Eighth Congress of the United States of America, Begun and Held at the City of Washington, in the District of Columbia, on Monday, the Seventeenth of October, In the Year 1803. And the Independence of the United States the Twenty-Eighth. [LOUISIANA PURCHASE - THOMAS JEFFERSON].
Washington, D.C.: The United States Congress, 1804. 0. Soft cover. Octavo. 225, vipp. Wrappers, with a small piece of the spine missing at the tail. In a protective box. Last 10 leaves waterstained. Partially uncut. Some foxing. Overall, a very good copy. The official public printing by Congress of the ratified Louisiana Purchase, preceded in print only by ephemeral leaflets at the time of ratification. The Eighth Congress opened by endorsing Thomas Jefferson's audacious acquisition of the Louisiana territory, and went on to create a stock for the purpose of carrying it into effect. The texts include the official "Act to enable the President of the United States to take possession of the territories ceded by France and for the temporary government thereof;" alongside the original treaty and conventions with France by which the lands were acquired (printed in English and French). Jefferson's proclamation announcing the ratification is also printed here. Very Good.
