Illustrated with numerous colour plates, with two of the volumes in their original unclipped dust wrappers. First Edition.A four volume set with some of the titles from within the 'Britain in Pictures' series, with two volumes ('Wild Flowers in Britain' and 'Insect Life in Britain') in their original unclipped dust wrappers. The 'Britain in Pictures' social history series was launched by Collins in 1941, with the aim of boosting wartime morale. They also served to record the British way of life in case it was lost under German occupation. This series had a range of popular literary contributors, such as George Orwell, Cecil Beaton, and Graham Greene. Titles in this selection include: 'English Country Houses' by Vita Sackville-West, published in 1941 with twelve colour plates. This work looks at several English country homes, such as Harewood House, Mells Manor, and Newstead Abbey. 'Insect Life in Britain' by Geoffrey Taylor, published in 1945 with eight colour plates. This text examines British insects and their entomology. 'Wild Flowers in Britain' by Geoffrey Grigson, published in 1945 with twelve colour plates. This volume walks the reader through the types of wildflowers and where to find them. 'British Garden Flowers' by George M. Taylor, published in 1946 with eight colour plates. This work examines the flowers found in British colours, with descriptions of climate and floral arrangements.Each volume was edited by W. J. Turner. Collated, complete. In the publisher's original cloth binding, with two volumes in their original unclipped dust wrapper. A few marks to boards, with fading to the top edge, such as 'British Garden Flowers&apos. Wear along front joint to 'English Country Houses', with edgewear to head of spine. Dust wrappers are very smart, with minimal edge wear and just some age-toning to spine region. Light spotting and age-toning to fly leaves as well as reverse. A few spots to paste downs and endpapers to 'English Country Houses&apos. Internally, firmly bound.
