The Plates include five for Prometheus Chain'd; four each for Suppliants, Seven Chiefs Against Thebes, Agamemnon, Choephor; five for The Furies; four for The Persians. A charming rebound copy of John Flaxman's 'Compositions from the Tragedies of Aeschylus' and 'Compositions from the Works Days and Theogony of Hesiod', both first editions bound together in one volume. 'Compositions from the Works Days and Theogony of Hesiod' is a first edition. 'Tragedies of Aeschylus' is a later edition. 'Compositions from the Tragedies of Aeschylus' was designed by John Flaxman, engraved by Thomas Prioli and Frank Howard, and published by 'Mifs Flaxman, & Mifs Maria Denman' in 1831. Collated, complete with 36 monochromatic plates. 'Compositions from the Works Days and Theogony of Hesiod' was designed by John Flaxman, engraved by William Blake and published by Longman Hurst, Reese, Orme & Brown in 1817. Collated, complete with 37 monochromatic plates. Containing a number of Flaxman's classical compositions, accompanied with excerpts from the various works of Aeschylus and Hesiod in English translation. John Flaxman was an English sculptor, illustrator, designer, and leading artist of the Neoclassical style in Britain and Europe. Flaxwell is best remembered for iconic flat, clean and linear style employed within his book illustrations that contributed much to the spread of Neoclassicism in England. Due to the popularity and vast influence of this style Flaxwell was commissioned by notable names such as Georgiana Hare-Naylor, Thomas Hope and Lady Spencer to design illustrations for the works of a variety of classical authors and poets, including Aeschylus and Hesiod, as seen within this copy. In a half morocco binding with marbled paper boards. Externally, generally smart. Rubbed to extremities and head and tail of spine resulting in slight loss to leather. Slight rubbing to joints. Marbled paper to front and rear board rubbed and slightly worn at joint. Small loss to marbled paper, lower extremity, rear board. Small handling mark to front board. Front hinge split, slightly showing chords but very firm. Marbled endpapers. Ink inscription by prior owner to second front free-endpaper. Undated, to the title page, and to the engravings, which identifies this copy as the first printing of 1795 according to British library entry on Jisc. 'Compositions from the Tragedies of Aeschylus' was designed by John Flaxman, engraved by Thomas Prioli. Collated, complete with 30 monochromatic plates. Designed by John Flaxman and orignally engraved by William Blake, this later edition is engraved by one Mademoiselle Soyer (presumably Charlotte Louise Soyer), and makes for a interesting insight into the Hesiod's work. n decorative cloth binding with gilt detailng. Externally smart, there is wear to the joints and backstrip, as well as strain to hinges. Internally, the pages are generally firmly bound, though there is strain to the rear section of the book, and are bright and clean throughout, aside from some age toning. Very Good .
