Edmund Burke 70070
A philosophical enquiry into the origin of our ideas of the sublime and beautiful, and other pre-revolutionary writings
Penguin Classics, 1998. Paperback. Pp: 472. Edmund Burke was one of the foremost philosophers of the eighteenth century and wrote widely on aesthetics, politics and society. In this landmark work, he propounds his theory that the sublime and the beautiful should be regarded as distinct and wholly separate states - the first, an experience inspired by fear and awe, the second an expression of pleasure and serenity. Eloquent and profound, A Philosophical Enquiry is an involving account of our sensory, imaginative and judgmental processes and their relation to artistic appreciation. Burke's work was hugely influential on his contemporaries and also admired by later writers such as Matthew Arnold and William Wordsworth. This volume also contains several of his early political works on subjects including natural society, government and the American colonies, which illustrate his liberal, humane views. London, printed for J. Dodsley, in Pall Mall, 1765. Early Printing. Full Calf. Fourth Edition, "with improvements," complete in two volumes, of the "best contemporary account" of European colonization of the New World. (Howes). Printed by William Bowyer, whose records show only 500 copies went through the press. Demy 8vo (201 x 122mm): [8],xii,324; xii,308pp, with folding frontispiece map in each volume by Emanuel Bowen (South America and North America). Continental speckled calf, spines in six compartments divided by gilt rules, red leather lettering pieces, volume numbers in gilt to third compartments. A handsome set, tightly bond, end sheets heavily foxed, text pages more lightly so, maps fine. Sabin 9282. Todd 4d. Howes B974. Hill 218 (for authorship). Maslen and Lancaster (Bowyer ledgers) 4536. Higgs 1499. TPL 254 (first edition). Goldsmiths' 9576. Europeans began establishing colonies in the Americas after 1600, on the Caribbean Islands and the eastern coast of North America (England, France, and the Netherlands) and in Central and South America (Spain and Portugal). By then, most Native Americans living in the region had died from diseases, earlier introduced by European explorers and sailors. The first volume of European Settlements deals largely with Hispanic America, including Mexico, New Mexico, and English claims to California, Peru, Chile, and Brazil. The second volume describes European colonies in the West Indies and North America. Authorship of this work remains in dispute. Edmund Burke told Boswell that he only "revised" it. But Todd concludes that it is mainly Edmund's work, though it may also have been a collaboration with his cousin, William Burke, and brother, Richard. Howes, however, think it was "actually written by William Burke, but usually ascribed to his more famous kinsman who gave substantial help." Interestingly, Higgs notes that at the sale of Dodsley's autographs in 1833 "was sold the original receipt for £240 for this book signed by [Edmund] Burke." Regardless, the work was extremely popular and frequently reprinted and translated. N. B. With few exceptions (always identified), we only stock books in exceptional condition. [Warren Hastings]. BURKE, Edmund.
Articles of Charge of High Crimes and Misdemeanors Against Warren Hastings, Esquire Late Governer General of Bengal [with] The Defence of Warren Hastings, Esq .. at the Bar of the House of Commons....
London, Stockdale1786. Octavo calf (rebacked).
¶ I got confused, then bored, trying to untangle all the forms in which Burke's charges and Hasting's defence appeared. So what is here are articles I to XXII of Burke's charges (of which XXII, the last, seems the only one Burke is solely responsible for). Of these, articles I to XVI are continuously paginated and signed; articles XVII to XXI are a separate printing and presumably had a title if sold separately; and article XXII is again separately signed, and titled as the fourth [and last] part. At the end of the first part of the 'Defence' the publishers advertise part II ready for "Thursday next" (9 May) and 'The Charges' complete in one volume which, as Burke had only finished presenting his charges the day before the advert dated 6 May, seems fairly speedy. Hasting's defence is in 3 parts each with titles but is continuously paginated and signed. So, some of it may be first printings and some may be reprinting, presumably from standing type. The rest is up to you.
